Right now, if you can return to the place you died, you should be able to get back your geo-- as long as you didn't die twice before getting it back. If you've taken the path from Fungal Wastes where you fall down a pit into Deep Nest and you're trying to leave, you'll probably need to focus on that suggestion specifically, but for future there are other things you can do if you want to save money.
First, remember that you can collect lots of geo just by playing the game normally so it isn't really that important. IF you happen to be going for a couple of very specific exceptions later in the game where you do need a good pile of cash, let us know what areas you've visited so far in the game, and people can supply suggestions where to get that money faster and more safely than wherever you died.
There's a place you can unlock in Dirtmouth (once you get back there anyway) where you can get back your Shade to restore your shattered soul container and lost geo (which are two separate things).
My advice, if you are at 1 mask left and you don't think you are gonna make it, just exit the game. This way you don't loose your geo.
This and kanna's advices cover pretty much everything about geo.
My record is 12000+. I saw a Let's Play in which someone lost 20000+ and kept playing.
I wouldn't have lost probably anything at all if I used @MADE IN IRON's tip, though!
