please tell me theres a way to edit save files (spoilers for nailsmith ahead)

So i upgraded the nail to the max, and the smith ran outside and asked me to kill him

i meant to dream nail him, but accidentally attacked normally and killed him </3

i looked it up and i realised theres and achievement for him, im 23 hours into this save file
and 93% completion and dont wanna restart </3

is he big ded forever?

If you are into achievements you will have to do another playthrough to get all the achievements, and in that new playthrough you can leave him live to get the other achievement.
I don't know anything about savefiles so I can't help you with that.

Like Lukar said, there are achievements for both choices here so you can just make this the save where you killed the Nailsmith and have your redemption run in your next save. I'm sure someone will post how to decrypt your save file so you can edit it and/or post an edited save file offer at some point, but it's up to you.

If you're determined to go back though, the only thing I know how to suggest right off the bat is to navigate to your save files, rename that save slot (they're numbered so you should know which one it is), and then replace it with one of the back-ups (by renaming the number-matched "*.bak" back-up file to the original name of the "*.sav" save file).

The files are located here in Windows (after copying, you can use CTRL+L and paste into a File Explorer window): %AppData%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow KnightCherry\Hollow Knight

I hope you're making sure to get each ending as soon as it's obtainable though. (Unlocking the second two endings locks you out of the first available one on a save file, so there's no reason not to go for it as soon as you're able.)

I'm not saying that there's no way to change your savefile, I'm just saying that I don't know how to do so, there's probably a way to ´´revive`` him and someone else knows it, but not I.

Well, kind of. If OP's backups have already been overwritten, it won't work though. I hope they'll just vow to let the Nailsmith live in their next run.

can you give a hint to what effects the endings? i heard the pure vessel charm changes the ending, ive only gotten half of it so far

There is no pure vessel charm, but the only thing that affects the endings is whether you have the upgraded version of Kingsoul (forgot what it was called), and beat the game. That is the only thing.

^^^ If you have the charm from Coco's spoiler, it's pretty much your last chance to get the first available ending before the next two endings permanently replace it.

You can get every ending on one save file, so might as well go for as many of them as you can! (Technically there's one more ending you can lock yourself out of besides the first one later on, but it's less likely most people will do this.)

i checked, save file didnt go back far enough :( I have a terrible habit of sitting on a bench TWICE incase it didnt save the first time

Okay, then.
Firstly, create save backups before any editing.

Then, you can go to this editor: https://bloodorca.github.io/hollow/

When you load your save file, you can use Ctrl + F to quickly find the text "nailsmithKilled".
Then, you can change these three lines so they look like here:

"nailsmithKilled": false,
"nailsmithSpared": true,
"nailsmithSheo": true,

Then you can just press "Download encrypted (PC)" and overwrite your save file.
Hope it will work as intended!

PS. I don't think there is a way to dreamnail him anymore on the cliff, because in the game whenever you leave the screen, he disappears. A player has only one chance to do it per save. Editing/leaving screen breaks this moment. You can go look for him somewhere else after editing, though.
