I prefered that save everywhere, trial and error instant death mechanic to the huge amount of backtracking I have to do in Hollow Knight and to me the controls feel just as tight in both games - I was able to breeze through most sections in Ori quite easily because I really enjoyed the controls.
Need to plod around the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ map for an hour now trying to make the geo back to get the weapon upgrade. The first time in this game I’ve felt truly annoyed at it.
I've played this game for over 200 hours and I've never lost my Geo when I actually gave a damn. Never used the confessor either, but if you know you're such a klutz you can't even survive against normal monsters/hazards when actually trying, the confessor's always there when you need them.
Oh, and it's not like you can't farm 5000 Geo in 15 minutes either: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1238254897

I think this person has figured things out or finished/quit the game by now
(please don't necropost)
I lost 2000+ Geo due to being stuck behind a jumping puzzle. And then I died trying to get through that jumping puzzle, back to my Geo. The game never told me that my Geo would be lost forever, so this came quite as a surprise.
Afterwards, I was really ticked off and the game's spell was broken. Suddenly, the repetitive music was annoying, the long distances you have to cross to get to specific NPCs was a repetitive chore. Enemies felt the same and like an annoying distraction, instead of an entertaining part of the game. I just didn't enjoy it anymore, because that memory of getting screwed over without warning by the game was constantly looming over me, while I was trying to grind back to 1800 Geos to buy that floating lamp for the undernest. Let me tell you: grinding Geos is not fun in this game.
People say that it's like Dark Souls and you're supposed to expect it, but not everybody in the world played Dark Souls.
The thing that truly annoyed me, though, must have been that graveyard bug. I visited it after losing all my stuff, after reading people mentioning it, here, thinking that the bug was some kind of way to give people a chance to get back their lost Geo for a price, or something, but nope.
"Seems like you have no regrets."
I very much doubt that this was an intentional insult to injury, but it definitely felt like one.
Now, the good news are: you actually CAN get your Geo back. Though you will be screwing over the game harder than it did you. And all you need to do, is take your User1(or whatever number you chose) file to riiiiight here:
https://bloodorca.github.io/hollow/
Your user1 file is like to be here:
C:\Users\<Your profile>\AppData\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight
And then you just alter the number in the line " "geo": <Number of your current Geo>,"
This basically lets you set your Geo to whatever you want. I just returned my lost Geo to me and free of the obligation of grinding, continued playing.
Nice necro. Some people are too precious about necro, but who cares. This is still REALLY USEFUL and may inspire me to play through again now that I can claim my lost geo back easily.
Well what did you think would happen to it if you died twice? It would be completely pointless to take it away if it was never permanent.
Afterwards, I was really ticked off and the game's spell was broken.
So you can't handle a game having an actual real penalty for death? You're supposed to not want to die and, if you die once, you're supposed to REALLY not die twice. That's the point.
Suddenly, the repetitive music was annoying, the long distances you have to cross to get to specific NPCs was a repetitive chore.
Yes, this is called anger. When you're angry, your perceptions of other things also becomes twisted. Kind of like how, if you don't like a person, every thing they say sounds like an insult even if it isn't.
This basically lets you set your Geo to whatever you want. I just returned my lost Geo to me and free of the obligation of grinding, continued playing.
So, as long as you cheat to avoid damage, you like the game more? Why stop there? Why not just use the invincibility bug to nerf everything and plow through the game with no fear of death? Pretty sad when you have to cheat at the first sign of hardship.
Besides, the game really makes this loss of Geo not a big deal
-You don't need a lot of money to begin with
-It's easy to grind and make it back if you lose it. You also gain a ton of it from general exploring. I lost thousands via deaths and never had to do any grinding since exploring earned it all back.
-In most cases, it's very easy to go back to your spirit to collect it.
-For most bosses, the spirit is very-conveniently outside the bossroom. Quite different from Dark Souls.
-Most importantly, the game gives you a very easy method to summon the spirit right to the first town so you don't have to go after it...thus making it hard to actually lose Geo.
So, yeah, the game has many reasons why this just isn't that big a deal. You're overreacting to your angry feelings by pretending that it ruined the game for you when it really changes little.
This improved my experience with the game immensely, therefore this was the right choice for me.
Also, I don't give a bug's shell if you approve of the way I play videogames or not.
