Is this game overrated?
I see people praise this game like it is the best thing ever, but does it really live up to the praise?

Hollow knight is downright boring in my opinion. Nothing keeping me in it. The gameplay is meh, the soundtrack is meh. The bosses are it's only strong point.

It's okay, you don't have to like the same things as the majority of people who liked it 🙂 I'm sure some people would also not like something that you liked, it's totally normal.

Incredibly great soundtrack, lore that requires you to think to piece it together, interesting and challenging bossfights, lots of secrets that you can easily miss if you are not exploring areas thoroughly. It has lots of areas and bosses and they are still managing to be unique. OST and attention to details in things like environment, backgrounds or enemies create an amazing atmosphere so exploring new areas while enjoying the views is always a blast. It is interesting to experiment with your equipment to create different builds with different styles but the system is not overly complicated so you don't have to read 20 billion guides to understand it.
Music is great, gameplay is just boring honestly and annoying, especially boss fights. I was led to believe this game was chill but it honestly just feels like 2D dark souls.
Well, it is often compared to Dark Souls. It's a fairly similar type of a game and thus has a somewhat similar appeal.

Feel kinda weird that people go to Hollow Knight fandom to absolutely complain about Hollow Knight

Sometimes it can be hard for people to reconcile the fact that they have an unpopular opinion, and/or they need to find others that share their opinion. Hence resurrecting a very old thread like this one.

In the long run, I'm sure most of them eventually realize it's just as OK to be part of the crowd as not (at least in terms of opinions on video games).

I was looking forward and really liked this game until i lost 1000 coins because i fleed from a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bunny armored guy and my ghost hitting me. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid game. I shoulkda fought 2 ghosts and recover my coins.
Insta deleted, ask for refund. ♥♥♥♥ this crap.

I finished bloodborne ng+ and sekiro, never raged. But i just tilted too hard with this nonsense, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ disgusting

That's pretty weak, dude. Losing your stuff is fully your own fault, but even ignoring that, if you kept playing, you'd soon find out 1000 geo is basically small change and doesn't even slow you down much.

You do you, though.

I know what you mean, I had a lot of "rage quits" when I had a bad day in many games (not only in this one).
I lost ~12000 Geo before someone reminded me that I can Quit to Menu when I have 1 health mask left 🙂 Geo farming is easy and fast anyway even if you don't remember about Quit to Menu, 1000 Geo is nothing. You practically swim in Geo in this game, it falls everywhere.

I understand you well. Sekiro's and HK's "difficulty" are completely different. Sekiro's boss attacks are much more predictable and I can see my improvement through each death and trial. Therefore each fight is like a quiz or exam. HK's literally "make it more difficult because we want it to be so". I can learn something at the beginning but the later game teaches utterly nothing. Then I found myself keep dying with knowing every single boss attack and trap, just based on random events. So I can bear Sekiro, but not HK.

It's one thing to compare games, but when people flat out fail to accept a game for what it is and try to overlay their memories of some other game on top of it instead, they're not likely to enjoy the *new* game because, well, it's not the same game and that's a recipe for failure (in a few different ways).

@lurkers: If you're having trouble, ask for help in the Discussions forum or watch a guide video on Youtube. Check out @rezno[R]'s Save Completion Analyze Tool. Loads of support exists for this game from multiple different sources, because a lot of people love the game enough to have sunk a lot of hours into it, and they know it inside out.

Wdym? Are you trying to say "evaluating game A in reference to B is always invalid" because "you cannot use the memory of B to overlay because they are different games?" Then Atari E.T. is not a trash game anymore, because all games better than that are "different games".

You like the game - it's fine. That's all.

Never in my entire life played a Metroidvania and only heard stuff about that genre, it sounded waay too boring and tedious for me.

I got this game and i did not expect to be that good for a genre i was not interested in, plus for $15 it has a ♥♥♥♥ ton of stuff to do, and there are reasons to play it multiple times. Idk if it is overrated cause i rarely see people talking about it, it didnt got too much attention when it was released since there were other games that got people attention, as far as im aware it wasnt mainstream, so i dont think it is overrated.

Tbh the only "overrated" thing about the game was the difficulty.

Imo the game is not "difficult" to finish (Like doing only the necessary stuff to get to the final boss and get to the credits). But to truly complete the game (Doing side quests, optional bosses, Godmaster stuff, etc) is the real challenge.

As I already said, there's nothing wrong with comparing games. Looking for games with similar components to games you like is obviously a good way to find new games you might like. And naturally we don't like every game that fits that bill.

I never said you have to play this game or that it matters to me if you like it or not-- only that your posts indicate you were expecting it to be something it's not (which is fine) and then you were blaming the game for that expectation mismatch (which doesn't make sense). The giveaway here is that the only thing you're "comparing" is difficulty level.

If you come to a game with a different skillset than it requires, you eventually make a choice that you either are invested enough to want to learn the skillset OR you decide you're not invested enough and move on. So go ahead and move on. Why publicly complain a game is too hard for you if you've already given up?

if you can't learn the pattern then it's your problem alone, lol. All the speedrunners of Hollow Knight would like to have a word with you regarding boss patterns and strategies.

I didn't eventually ask for refund. I will just ignore the coin loss i guess. I wanted to buy stuff so i can progress.. now i have to grind the coins again. It's odd i got so tilted at this cause i like hard games. I mean bloodborne for me remains a masterpiece.
I loved the world, the story and the combat was just perfect. Somehow i like very much the world in this game, the story is mysterious. Don't know about combat but i guess i need to progress to get dash and other things.

After all i finished Captain Claw when i was a kid.. so if i can beat that.. i can beat anything :))
