Sharp Dash is not that bad for Pure Vessel. I usually Shadow Dash through the Melee attacks when I am cornered. Without the Sharp Shadow, you won't reach as much as you need to completely dodge his attack.
Congrats anyways on beating him.
I had a similar experience with PV. I was trying to dash through it, and I stuggled because of it. The moment I starting using pogo instead, learning the fight became easy.
By refusing to adapt to a new strategy, you're only making it harder for yourself.
