Using the Shade Cloak to avoid his attacks is very risky, since it doesn't work well against some of his attacks; if you're on the ground when he starts a charge, triple slash or void tentacle attack, it's probably already too late to jump over it as well.
Also, don't go too far away from him (as in, don't let him go off-screen); if you do, he might do a ground-stab out of a teleport, which is pretty much the only attack he has that poses a threat to an airborne player. If you're closer, instead of teleporting into the air he'll just jump, and you can dodge the attack by moving away from him a little bit.
For charms, Quick Slash and Unbreakable Strength are always good. Steady Body may make it easier to attack him during his ground stab attack (since it'll keep you in place and won't push you into one the blades sticking out of the ground).
As for staggers; use them to heal. If you don't have to heal, they're pretty meaningless, since he'll just immediately get up if you attack him.
- Try to stay in the middle of the arena and try to keep him in sight, he's very dangerous when you can't see him.
- Learn to read his sound telegraphs. He makes quite distinct sounds for most of his moves and you can use this.
- Heal only when he's staggered. With quick focus, you can heal two masks, only one without it. Use the remaining time to get a free hit or two.
- Punish him during his focus attack. If you have quick slash, you'll deal a lot of damage this way.
- Try not to panick when he does the void tendrils attack, it's easy to avoid (you just jump over them) and unlike his other attacks, he gives you a lot of time to react.
- You can sometimes shadow dash through his parry but I never learned to do that reliably. I found that a much better way is to learn to tell when he's about to parry and just not attack.
Your problem right there: Shadow Dash.
I started with a shadow dash strategy and found it flawed. Yes, it's ideal for when he does his two dash-type moves on you but and that's fine for the first phase...but once he starts adding moves, it falls apart. You get in the habit of dashing towards him when he appears in front of you and, if he does the tendril or the exploding spheres, you'll dash toward him out of habit and be screwed and be out of position to dodge.
For me, I found my reflexes just weren't good enough to wait and see if he's about to do a dash move or was going to summon spheres. I got killed constantly by dashing at him here.
In the end, change the strategy, kill the shadow dash (at least for the ground) and start jumping. It's tricky to get the timing and the right height but it's better to jump over everything he does. Basically if he does a move, you do a light jump in the air and maybe slightly away from him. From here you do one of a few things:
-If it's a ground attack (dash or slash), you land next to him and attack him ONCE. Just once. This will very likely trigger his next attack and you need to move very quick after doing the attack. I actually like this because you can control his movements. Attacking here (or even missing the attack) WILL trigger his next move...this makes him kind of predictable and you get into a pattern of him doing a move and then you triggering the next one which makes it easier to dodge.
(When dodging the slash attack, the trick is to get HIGHER on the first jump...try not to half-ass the leap. It seems like parts of the attack animation will still brush through you as long as you're high enough...but only if you're high. Most of the times I was hit by the slash was because I wasn't high enough, not because I wasn't far away enough...you can be pretty close and still dodge it).
-If it's the ground pound move, you're in mid-air already so just do a double jump to help manuever through the spikes when they come up. If you can, land next to him for a single slash. I also find the hit-detection to be VERY generous here where parts of Pure Vessel's body have definitely touched me when dodging but, as long as I wasn't hit by his weapon, I didn't take damage.
-If it's the laser attack then, delay for a bit, try to get lower to the ground, then dash through the lasers. The timing on this can be hard and it's easy to dash too early and still get hit but practice and you'll get it. After the dash you should be close to him and again can tag him for a single hit. As always JUST DO ONE HIT.
-If it's the sphere attack, you'll already be in the air since you jumped when he appears but you'll have time to observe the move. I usually fire off a fireball here while he's using the sphere move for a little damage. You can try healing but a bubble may appear right on you so do so at your own peril. You can get close to him and attack here but I don't like to do it...The reason being is the attack will trigger him to attack immediately and the spheres may not have exploded by then and you won't have room to avoid the attack. Just fire off a fireball early and wait out the rest of the move.
-Tendril attack. Again, you should be in midair when you see it so do a double jump to get higher...if close enough, dash over him and attack him from behind (should be able to get in two hits but ONLY two). If you're too far away just dash backwards to avoid the move entirely and wait for the next one.
I've seen people jumping over his attacks, but I personally learned to shadow dash through most of them and beat him very reliably that way.
Maybe but I think you need made reflexes or hand-eye coordination to pull this off. Many folks are older or just can't react in time. Jumping takes the twitch reflexes out of it and gives players much more time to recognize the moves. Plus, like I said above, a single physical slash after each jump will trigger the next attack and make it easier for players to dodge them.
When I created this topic I hoped there would a combination of charms or an attack pattern that can make this boss easy, like when I fought Flukemarm for the first time with the nail with no upgrades and not so useful charms. Then I read you can defeat him with the spore and thorns of agony charms and I beat him on my first try. But now glad that this isn't the case with Pure Vessel. He'll wreck me if I don't approach the fight seriously and no matter how much I practice I know he'll beat me in 50 % of my attempts. The wins feel more satisfying that way and the unpredictable nature of his moves just make the fight more fun. Luck is still a major factor but I did train my muscle memory enough and I don't panic like when I started.
Fingers crosses that the last boss isn't harder than this guy though.
The "last boss" is much harder than Pure Vessel. Like seriously MUCH harder.
