Can't get into the art style at all... Is the game worth pushing through?
Feel like I'm playing some weird Tim Burton-esque children's game. Is the art style part of the draw for the high scores or, if I stick with it, does the gameplay ramp up to something great?

The scores generally come from gameplay. And a bit from the detail in the game world, so art is a small factor.
I kinda like the Tim Burton-esque style.

I mean, everyone can have their own opinion and tastes, but imo the artstyle is really beautiful and detailed. Now for your question-the platforming becomes more complex later on,since u'll have more gadgets and powerups to use,the enemies stronger, etc. It's up to you man,i don't really know why u bought this game if u don't like the style.Like, afterall, that's the first thing u see in the images/trailers.

I understand your opinion and highly respect it but i have to say that i don't think it will be if you don't like the artstyle. The game is a "atmospheric adventure" which means the satisfaction comes from the details. I'm not saying that the gameplay isn't good. I'm just saying if you REALLY hate the art style, then it wouldn't be possible to push through because every moment is filled with it. But for me, the "highscores" are from the gameplay but if i didn't like the artstyle, i don't think i could play it.

Cool, thanks all for your input!

@DrakeKay - Yeah, I agree completely, seems I made a boneheaded move on this one, damn summer sale strikes again :)

I've seen people saying it looks like a Tim Burton cartoon for a long while, but I just don't see it. Don't Starve has an art style reminiscent of Burton. This game's art just seems vaguely similar to H.R. Giger or Zdzisław Beksiński's work. (Only much more simplified and cartoony.)

It's hand drawn and has a lot of little love and detail put into it. If it doesn't immediately draw you into it, you'll probably feel like you're stuck with an average, but difficult platformer.
