How does saving work in this game?
Just purchased this. I get the impression that benches allow you to save. But simply quitting the game tells me that everything will be saved too. I got killed once, spawned back at the bench, and it seemed to keep my progress, I only lost my token thingies. So is it auto-save then?

Bench are respawn points but the game constantly saves your progress

The intention is that you save at benches, however there is a caveat to the system where it will save your progress when you quit the game (you'll respawn at the last rested at bench though). The caveat is in place for those that just don't have the time to save the intended way (ie: If you care about immersion, always save at a bench/don't take advantage of the caveat).

I hope you realized that your magic bar in the top left is broken in half and that you have to travel to the place where you died to kill your ghost (or whatever) in order to regain your money and magic bar.

It's more like a 33% penalty to your Soul maximum, not 50% (killing the dark thing that spawns where you died will restore your maximum capacity back to 100%).

In early versions of the game it may have halved it.

I had no idea I could retrieve my stuff. That's good to know.

The great thing about it is that you get to keep everything you 've found and picked up upon dying. No need to go back and break that shortcut-wall again to pick the secret grub, no need to go activate that far away switch twice, what's done is done!

It's a really good modern tweak and "quality of life" improvement to the usual formula imo. The only penalty for dying is having to retrieve your ghost for money and max soul, and being sent back to the last bench of course.

I got this game yesterday (or two days ago; idr), and I have to say that the way they handle everything is so amaingly fair. Even the way your ghost gets stronger as the game progresses is a nice touch that makes things interesting. I have yet to find out what happens when you die twice in a row though.

The ghost with all your stuff is replaced with a ghost that has what you had when you died that second time. Aka: You lose what the first ghost held.

Am I correct in assuming that the magic glass does NOT break down further?

Correct.

Oh, and another question if anyone sees this. What are those worm things for? I set them free and nothing happens. What's the deal?

Go underground from the town and then head left (I don't know for how many rooms); you'll soon find a tall room with a bunch of platforms. There's a room at the top left of this room; go in there and you'll find all the worns you've saved. An old man worm will give you a bunch of stuff with each worm you save.

Go down from Dirtmouth to the Crossroads, then straight left two screens. You'll find the Grubfather.

There are several points in the game where it's better to quit out than try and make it back to the last bench. It's never required, but it is easier, and you won't lose anything for doing so.

I noticed that if I somehow get into some random bossfight, I can just quit the game and I'll be back at the hot springs, bench, or whatever rest point.
