Hiveblood, Grubsong, and Deep Focus can help keep you alive while exploring, but won't help nearly as much in combat (Stalwart Shell and Quick Focus can help more there).
If you're not confident going into something, put it off as long as possible and come back with more upgrades to minimize risk.
Anything that lets you kill enemies and bosses faster also lessens the likelyhood of death. (Quick Slash, Shaman Stone, Spell Twister, etc)
Be patient. Don't rush into something if you aren't at full health if possible; take your time on platforming challenges. Stay calm or a mistake can snowball into death.
If you're willing to, you can negate a large part of Steel Soul by just quitting out if you get brought down to 1 health; it will spawn you back at the last bench you rested at. This does take much of the satisfaction out of it though, and many people probably see it as cheating, so be warned. This can also be used for fast travel if you leave your last bench somewhere convenient like a stag station, though some things force a save and stop this (notable examples: the Grey Mourner sets your bench to the one outside her home, Dream Bosses respawn you near there corpse, the bowl thing that gives you the Shade Cloak sets you right next to it, and I believe the Void Heart does the same).
Dream boss refights don't count as a death, so you can die in them without worrying too much. Note that this is only for Failed Champion, Lost Kin, and Soul Tyrant. Dying against Radiance or while in the White Palace both count as deaths and will end your run; though Radiance isn't technically required for 100%.
That's everything I can think of at the moment, I'll add anything else I come up with later.
Some other things I'd add to that would be:
- it's incredibly helpful to plan out a general route before you start
- you'll want to grab as many upgrades as soon as possible, but don't take unnecessary risks to get them
- the gathering swarm charm is useful to quickly get the geo for mask shards and vessel fragments
- optional areas and bosses should be left until later in the run
- be especially carefull around enemies that deal 2 points of damage, you'd be suprised how fast they can drain your health
- dying in the arena ends your run
-Fragile Strength is rad, but once you have the Channelled Nail don't be afraid to swap it out for something else if you think a different charm combo might be more useful.
-Hiveblood+Grubsong+Deep Focus means you have infinite retries in the White Palace, either through patience or Focus gained from damage.
-You can go get the Crystal Heart and Dream Nail as soon as you have the Mantis Claw and Mothwing Cloak, and once you have the Crystal Heart you can go get the Monarch Wings and Isma's Tear. Depending on how you feel about Dung Defender and Broken Vessel you may want to put those upgrades off until you have more charms/health/nail upgrades.
-If you're good at tricksy sword pogo moves you can get the Pale Ore in Crystal Peak without going to get the Monarch Wings first, which means you can upgrade your nail at least twice before even fighting the Mantis Lords.
-Take your time and try to stay at full health as much as possible when exploring. That way if you goof up you have a nice margin of error to work with.
-Selling the trinkets+finding grubs+giving rancid eggs to Steel Soul Jin will make your money problems vanish super quickly.
