Newbie who recently bought the game, need tips.
Of course general skill within dodging patterns and such will take practice, but I'm just curious about what I should do in regards to overall progression.

Much appreciated.

So far I've gotten to the mushroom area, although I died too much and lost large amounts of money constantly and decided to delete the save file and start over.
If Hornet was the last boss you defeated, you want to head into the Fungal Wastes. I was a bit confused around this part as well. Your basic goal is that you want to get to the City of Tears. There are several ways of doing this, but the easiest is to take the direct entrance from the Fungal Wastes. Within the zone you'll find Hornet, that is where the entrance to the city is, but first you have to descend to the Mantis Village at the bottom of the area and find the Mantis Claw. You don't have to fight the boss down there to get the claw.

My biggest issue though is I have trouble progressing through the fungal wastes due to the enemies in it, I realize it takes practice but I can't really find a pattern in most of their attacks.

theres plenty of guides that can help like https://holdtoreset.com/hollow-knight-guide/ another piece of advice is to not care about money at all in early game since you'll have a truckload of it in mid game to end game. GL. for combat you'll get better over time.

Well, you can free the shopkeeper Sly in the Forgotten Crossroads. Once you find him he moves up to Dirtmouth. You can buy a key and a rancid egg from him. You can then use the key on the cave to the far right of Dirtmouth, which will unlock Jiji. Jiji will teleport your death shade into his hut for rancid eggs, the only problem is rancid eggs are pretty hard to come by earlier on in the game.

Mantis for the most part, also those pod-like things that fire bombs because I can't really get close to them.

The pods I usually just ignore, the mantises you jump-dash over them as they charge, then attack a bit and prep to jump-dash again.

Against the mantis the soul blast is your friend. It will one shot the flying ones and leave the big ones only a hit or two away from dead. As for the pods, like Edgy said, just ignore them. If you decide to kill them for the hunter's journal then wait til the end when you have more health and damage.

how to beat the bosses 101:

try, die, repeat until you kill them that's all
oh and mark of pride and quick slash are very good charms
(that's all)

Just play, honestly it will come with practice.

A really important thing to remember about this game is that it isn't a difficult game, its a punishing game. I mean this literally, the game severely punishes players for making mistakes. You don't really have a health meter you have a mistake allowance. Don't get hung up on not getting hit at all; think about how many times you can be hit before you die and what you need to do to stay above 0 health.

With that in mind, if you're having trouble exploring remember that you can use soul to heal yourself whenever its convenient. Also major monsters won't respawn unless you rest at a bench and minor monsters will respawn when you reenter a room. You can enter a room, kill a minor monster, leave, come back and do it again until your soul is full if you're taking lots of hits.

You can apply this mindset to the bosses too. An overwhelming majority of the bosses can be beaten more easily if you're willing to get hit a few times and use spells instead of healing so you can do even more damage to them. As long as they hit 0 before you do its fine. As the game progresses finding windows to heal yourself in boss fights will become increasingly impossible and using charms to make that easier is generally counter productive. The longer the boss fight goes the more likely you are to make mistakes, rather than making it easier to recover from those mistakes you're better off getting the boss fight done quicker so you won't have the opportunity to make them in the first place.
