For the trials, I think you'll normally have plenty of soul to heal or cast spells even without it, and at five notches, the cost is prohibitive anyway.

From my experience on playing HK on the nintendo (which doesnt really matter) kingsoul to me is just useless. if you wanna do the path of pain without the worry of loosing half of your hp in a few seconds then go ahead, keep it. but i wouldnt actually reccomend it considering the notches and how slow the soul generation generates
Personally I use Grubsong+Deep Focus for that, faster and less annoying than hiveblood but can be used anytime unlike kingsoul. More generally speaking, I think kingsoul is too expensive to be worthwhile in most situations, so I wouldn't bother keeping it. If it was 3 or maybe even 4 notches, it would be much closer a decision.
