Downpatching the game
so i'm interested in speedrunning this game (any% NMG) and speedrun.com says that the recommended patch to run is 1.2.2.1. I don't know how to do this and i don't fully understand the guide on speedrun.com. also, will this corrupt my savefiles?

Like the guide says, you have to paste certain commands into the Steam console that will make you download earlier versions of the game. It's not really anything you can easily misunderstand, although since there's no progress bar while downloading old patches you have to wait for the Steam Console's confirmation that the download is complete, which should take a while since each version is like 1.2 GB.
After that, just back up the hollow_knight.exe and hollow_knight_Data folder from your game's install in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Hollow Knight and place them in a folder on your PC. Then paste the downpatched .exe and data folder into the install and hope that it works.
Also, you're going to have to back up your save files too if you plan on keeping them, since they probably won't work on older patches. The save file location for this game is C:\Users\Your username here\AppData\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight

One thing I forgot to mention: after successfully downloading an old patch, the files for it should show up in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content, not in your Downloads folder.

Also you can't merge your current install with the downpatched one. Thus, after backing up your install, delete the remaining .exe and data folder and then paste in the downpatched .exe and data.

Reminder: The mod installer (https://radiance.host/mods/ModInstaller.exe) and other modding resources can be found from the pinned messages.

I can't access the folder you put at the end, I put my username in and everything. I am wanting to play custom knight so i downpatched to 1.4.3.2, this shouldn't mess up my game files right? Don't want to risk using the downpatched version without backed up save data

Try copying this text:
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
Then you can paste it inside the Run window (Windows + R) and press Enter, or inside the File Explorer's address bar (top) and press Enter.

Also for anyone else who wants to downpatch the game to 1.2.2.1, at some point Team Cherry helpfully put that version as a public beta branch which you can easily opt into by :
-Right-clicking HK in your library,
-Selecting "properties",
-Selecting "betas",
-Choosing 1.2.2.1 in the betas.

Reminder to back up your saves!
