Keyboard. But if I had to use a controller, D-pad. This game doesn't have analog controls, so the stick just gives you crappier control.

huh. hadnt thought of it like that. i find that when i use the d-pad, i tend to fat finger the buttons, especially in tense situations. but that's good advice, so ill store it up in the old noggin.

Personally, I use the D-pad for all 2d games. It just feels wierd to me to use an anologue stick on anything other than 3d games. I think the reason why is because I grew up playing games on a Game Boy Advance SP which only had a D-pad. It's always sounds crazy to me when I hear people say they used analogues for a game like this. It's all about preference.

I use both. When exploring the game the analog stick. For precise movements I'll switch to the d pad.

I only started using controller seriously when I started playing Dark Souls. I've been a keyboard user since the DOS days. Mostly played TPS games with a controller (XBone) after Dark Souls, and loved it. Tried a platformer recently - started with Slain. Because of the badly programmed controls, I could only use analog stick for movement. Beat the game with it and sort of got used to a stick for platforming. Started playing Hollow Knight. Couldn't get used to a d pad. Played a couple of hours with a stick. Forced myself to use a dpad when more precise controlling started being necessary.

Now I'm finally d-pad all the way, and stick just doesn't feel as right/precise. Never been a console player, so controller was always a bit foreign to me, but now I love it. Getting used to a d-pad was worth it.

cool. i guess i should start using d-pad. honestly, i would have done it earlier, but i tend to fat finger other buttons and end up being incredibly imprecise with it, which is why ive been sticking to the analog stick. i also find it more comfortable to use the analog stick, as it's level with the xyab buttons. (i also use xbone) thanks for the advice, and the story behind it :)

I had the same problem, couldn't get precise and fast enough on a d pad because I realistically wasn't using it anywhere (3D games use sticks and I haven't played 2D games with it) so stick was more comfortable and fast. I do recommend you try to switch to a d-pad because it does offer better precision than a stick in a game like Hollow Knight. Especially when you need to do jump + up or down strike.

I use analog but it's more for comfort with the xbox controller. I do run into some issue of angles not working sometimes. I might have to invest in another controller.

D-pad definitely, though I had to get a new controller recently and the dpad is terrrrrible. So it's a little temping to use the analog stick, but the movement is still more accurate with dpad imo.

For me, the analog stick feels more comfortable and familiar - BUT in difficult sections, I often find myself switching to the D-Pad of may Steam Deck.

I think both ways are viable and obviously also depend on the quality of th respective input method on your gamepad/device. However, assuming a high quality for both, I think a good D-Pad is actually better for 2D games that do not account for variations in movement speed and/or jump reach based on the analog input.

If it is just 0/1 move up/down/left/right/diagonally anyway, the shorter travel of a D-Pad and the clearer assignment of directions is better, in my eyes.
