21 Hours in and I just disocvered the Nailsmith
Not sure how I feel about this. Feeling kind of cheated right now, lol. I knew the boss fights seemed overly tedious, but I kept beating them after only a handful of tries so I figured it must be normal. People often mention how difficult the game is.

The last boss I fought before getting upgrades involved fighting 6 fat blue knights that curl up into balls and either charge in a staright line on the ground or bounce up and down. You fight two at a time and each time you kill one anther joins the fight until you kill 6 total. Each time another one joined the fight i was thinking "WTF WERE THESE GAME DEVS SMOKING, THEY JUST DO THE SAME TWO MOVES OVER AND OVER AND THEY TAKE 50 HITS TO DIE!".

I'm just venting I guess. I've enjoyed the game up to this point any my overall impression has been good, but the combat always felt tedious and long. Now I know why.

Anyone else make similar mishaps on their first playthough?

I'm afraid you are the only one.

Some gamer take the "base nail only challenge", but it's intentionnal.

Me, I just falled early in the Deep Nest early and couldn't find my way back to City of tear until the top of Kingdom's edge...

ouch that's rough
If you kept talking to Quirrell, Sly and Cloth, they tell you that you need to upgrade your nail.

Before the Mantis Lords, Quirrell advises you to visit the Naismith.

As for the Watcher Knights, they are a late-game boss, hence the difficulty. You may have probably acquired them but there are two spells that provide you with a nice ability. Invulnerability. For a second or so. You can use them to avoid contact damage during particular attacks.

Yup, that rings a bell :steamhappy: I do remember being warned that my weapon might not be stong enough now that you mention it. Knowing me, I probably decided I would kill the Mantis boss first since I was already there, then totally forgot about about upgrading my weapon by the time it was over.

I'd have to have the game in front of me to see if I have the charms you mentioned. I used the Dashmaster and Hiveblood charms to beat that fight though. Just tried to make it a point to prioritize dodging over attacking.

I forgot to mention charms, good point. I was referring to the Desolate Dive / Descending Dark and the Shadow Dash. I couldn't find your achievement progress so I do not know whether you have progressed so much to acquire them, though, given your playtime, I assume you must have acquired at least one of them by now.

HK bosses are very hard. especially when you play them for the first time. I remember how much time I spent trying to defeat Hornet for the first time. It takes time to learn the attacks to figure out how to dodge as well as the most appropriate time to heal.

Thanks for the advice. I have desolate dive and just the regular dash. I'll play around with the dive some to see how I can make use of the invincibility. I didn't realise it provided any

Not necessary. You can do just fine without it. In fact, just seems tricky to time, unless you happen to know the timing of the attack really well.

I actually quit the game for 6 months in Soul Sanctum until I was told there's a nailsmith, and after the upgrade Soul Sanctum was literally a cakewalk.

Additionally, you may not know about this, but there is a breakable wall that leads you above the boss room. Cut a rope and a chandelier falls down and kills one of the Watch Knights before you even start the fight.

Final Nail Upgrade is OP in general, especially when paired with Strength, and Quick Slash for bosses.
