The build I ultimately ended up using to beat him was:
Strength ( 3 ), Longnail ( 2 ), Grimmchild ( 2 ), Quick Focus ( 3 ), Grubsong ( 1 ).
- Strength will make the hits you land count.
- Quick Focus and Grubsong should allow you to get a decent amount of heals off during the safe moments in the fight and ensure you have the soul nessecary to heal.
- Grimmchild is required to fight the boss.
- Longnail is the most useful 2 notch charm if you can't have Mark of Pride, imo. Feel free to switch it out for Sharp Shadow if you prefer it for the NKG fight though.
lol the only time i consider to heal is between bat stages. i mean, is there really any other good time for it?
Same with his dash uppercut. If he appears to your left, run to the right (or vica versa), slash him as soon as he slashes at you (results in a counter) and then smack him again just before he uppercuts. Usually that will bounce you right between his followup fireballs too.
The only time these tactics change is if you get yourself trapped in the corner. He likes to bait you into hitting him during his pillars by appearing close to the edge, and after the pillars, can trap you with an uppercut or something...jump over him when this happens and you're fine, or dash through him if you have shade cloak.
Everything else is self explanatory. If you want a spoilerish video on some good tactics, watch this no-hit, charmless, vanilla (old nail, no shade cloak, etc.) run of NKG:

that video made me feel like a fetus compared to the dude playing. sheesh
So I read about Godmaster DLC, tried to complete 1-st Pantheon...aaand screw this, I`ll finish the story in Black Egg Temple and uninstall the game as fast as possible. Not only we fight all the same bosses again - very "entertaining" after 70+ hours of gameplay - but we should start at the very beginning if we fail. Nope, don`t have time for that(
lol tanking nkg? that's NOT somethin anyone wants to do. healing? pretty good
i did offensive + skill-based dodging. it took me more tries but i think in the end the skills i got will help me with that true last boss
no necro please.
