Game-breaking bug, cannot open inventory
There's obviously not full controller support for this game - that's really obnoxious, but it's Valve's fault for mislabeling the game. However, this is a game-breaking bug because there is no way to rebind the inventory key to something that works (like R3).

How are other people getting around this?

Edit:

Using the solution (marked post) I was able to rebind the "back" button to the keyboard letter "i" and now I can access the inventory menu via controller using the correct button on my generic Xbox360 controller.

Yes, I searched the discussion forums before posting, but I did not find any helpful posts. Many of the replies to this post were also not helpful.

It DOES have full controller support. it's even on XboxOne, PS4, and Switch.
IDK why you are having this problem.

You can rebind any key on any controller using steam itself, so don't worry about it :)

Hey maybe don't open up immediately with incorrect exclamations.

Valve is quite deceptive in this regard- when they say "full controller support", what they really mean is "X-Box controller support", not "PC controller support". This happens on a lot of games, unfortunately.

Best way to get around this is to enable the option in menu which says "Native Controller Input (Beta)"- this will deactivate controller support. After that, use Joy 2 Key.

It's not a great solution, but when developers are lazy and don't want to actually put proper controller support into the game, this is what happens.

Or you could just, as Dragonalias suggested, enable support for your controller in Steam itself. That also lets you remap buttons on your controller to whatever you want, and it should work for any Xinput controller.

I had no idea this was a thing. There's a few games I haven't been able to play - maybe now I can!

I know you already have a solution, but I just wanted to say that I have been playing with an Xbox 360 controller with no issue. There is clearly some other problem at play here.

I use an Xbox 360 controller too, and I have no problem. Maybe his 'back' button is broken and he doesn't realize it?

Even if the back button doesnt work there are lots of ways to open that same menu. Double tapping LB brings up the map page of that menu for example, from where you can just use the bumpers to get to whatever page you want. Also, im using an xbox 360 controller and have had no issues, perhaps your controller is to blame?
