Can't seem to fight the Hollow Knight boss

So I killed the 3 dreamers and reached the Black Egg Temple but when I go inside to fight the Hollow Knight, I just see him chained up. I can't attack him or the chains because they're protected in the white markings and the dream nail doesn't seem to do anything either. I understand i'm supposed to do something as you are trapped in the boss area but what i'm supposed to do is unclear. If someone could tell me the obvious thing i'm missing that would be great.

Oh yeah seeing it now there is a spot on the chain that isn't covered by the mark so you can hit it. I knew there was something obvious I was missing. Thanks for the info mate.

Another "obvious" thing once you are more advanced in the game (having the Void Heart): you can (and must) "dream nail" the Hollow Knight at a climax moment. (you can also continue the fight normally, try both ^^)
