I can also cancel using Esc, try that.
Is the steamlanguage the same as the system/keyboard-language? Just an idea.
I don't play Hollow Knight under Linux, but some games need to append a little command to the game:
LANG=C %command%
OR
LC_ALL=C %command%
OR
LC_ALL=C LANG=de_DE.UTF-8
The command resets the language. Try each one.
de_DE => German
fr-FR => France
etc

A problem that accurs, if the systemlanguage is NOT englisch. Few games have a problem with that under linux. Maybe it solve your problem, maybe not. Try it. If it doesn't work, delete the append command.
Its weird that your logic is "well since not literally everyone experienced it, it can't possibly be an issue with the game!" because there are tons of possibilities. The most likely part is that the devs made a mistake and my remappings didn't apply to those menus properly, leaving the exit key unbound.
Please don't be so patronizing.
