Need Help.
I wanna buy this game for my nephew. But due to the his religious family he can't play games that have magic and spells. Don't ask why, it's complicated 😩
I saw that there is spells in this game. Can he play with out using them, or they are mandatory?

Oof that's harsh. I would guess this game is very on or over the edge on that aspect.

Although nothing in the game is actually called magic or a 'spell', there is a thing called 'soul' and the word 'casting' is in the game. There are a few places where you have to use soul to get ahead in the game (in particular, enemies that block your way that can only be removed by using soul from a distance and floors that have to be destroyed with a downwards attack that uses soul) and realistically, you're going to be using the 'focus' ability to recover your health. The game will be practically impossible without using that. There are also numerous enemies that use soul to attack the player, which kind of look like (insectoid) wizards in capes.

What do spells MEAN in the context of their religion? There aren't spells as in collecting magic powder and making a circle to do a magic thing or brewing with a cauldron and saying a chant so someone trips on a stair, the spells are all just abilities that use a resource bar with occaisional utility aspects. If it's spells as in something a sorceror casts, then that probably applies to this game. Also there's a dream realm if that matters. And a few scary moments if your nephew is young. Beautiful game overall, but can be frustrating early on. Would recommend nonetheless. If you're still questioning, just look up some game reviews or a speedrun on 2x speed.
what in the actual f**k, would his parents actually check if there are spells in the game?

You know your nephew's situation better than we do. All we can give is the facts; the word magic or spell isn't used in the game itself. If his parents are going to look online, they will still see these guides with the word 'spell' in it. If that makes the game unsuitable for your nephew, then that makes the game unsuitable for your nephew. That's a call you'll have to make.
There are 4 Spells; Focus, Fireball, Quake, and Scream.

They differ from the other abilities in the game is that Spells consume a rescource(Soul), while other abilities do not. Hence the distinction.

Focus is the Spell you start with. It allows you to heal yourself. This spell is required to beat the game.

Fireball is the first ability that you get, and its required to progress. It allows you to do a ranged attack.

Quake can be aquired around mid-game, and while it is not required to beat the game at the bare minimum, you would miss out on a significant amount of content without it. It allows you to create concentrate force downward into a bursting shockwave.

Scream can be aquired early-game, but it's sort of hidden in a spot where you might not find it right away. It's not required to progress, but it is very useful, especially when enhanced. It allows you to conjure a wave of energy upward.

There are also various forces and Higher Beings in the world of Hallownest;

It's almost as if you didn't read a single word of the entire thread and just barged in with that post after reading the last sentence of the original post.

I read it. I listed of what each of the spells do, and they can judge for themselves if those aspects of the game qualify as 'blasphemous' to whatever they believe in.

So what's your problem?
you just use the attack. there's no menu saying "spells" or something so if you skip text explanations there's really no evidence they're "spells"

Actually, Shaman Stone and Spell Twister explicitly refer to them as "Spells". Spell Twister even has "Spell" in its name.
And the Snail Shaman calls the Fireball "A nasty little Spell" when he gives it to you.

See, now that is an actual point.

I feel like you have a personal grudge against me or something.

Its such a shame that this is even an issue in today's society.:steamsad:
Reminds me of when the churches preached the 'evils' of Pokemon, Harry Potter, and similar fantasy media.:steamfacepalm:
