This helped me a lot to beat him. And it wasn't boring even though the title says so.
You could forgo the Mark of Pride from the guide, since you'd mostly use the Great Slash anyway (I don't think it's affected by the MoP, iirc).
Mark your progress with the bullethell pufferfish (or whatever it's called), since he uses that at 75%, 50%, and 25% health, instead of the times he turns into a bat.
Yeah, NKG is way harder than The Radiance, since he also deals contact damage.
10 attempts? I've gone 100+ trials on him and still have yet to beat him. :P So.. good luck there.
Alternatively, you could banish the Troupe but eh
I just did another 10-15 attempts on this bastard.
Damn, this is the only moment in the game, when I really feel like throwing it away. Good thing I got everything else (besides Godhouse). But I want my 112% :(
Just to be sure: make sure you have all upgrades the game has to offer before attempting this fight, especially the Shade Cloak and Monarch Wings and preferably all masks.
The entire idea is just to have a counter to each of his attacks. Personally I found nail arts too much trouble, so the following assumes you're never charging.
* If he teleports on the ground and prepares to charge you, dash through him with the shade cloak, then walk after him a little so you don't get hit by the flames that rain down when he teleports away. (if you're lucky you can get a regular nail hit on him after the shade dash and before he jumps up) The flames spawn in fixed positions relative to him, so there's a bunch of safe spots. Try to remember them, since the flames are too fast to dodge.
* If he teleports in the air and charges down, shade-dash towards him, then jump and double-jump away from him. (if you're fast, you can get a downwards nail slash on him after dashing; the pogo means you won't need to use the monarch wings to double jump to avoid his flame trail)
* If he teleports on the ground and starts firing flaming bats, jump over the first bat and dash towards him, slash twice before he disappears. Try to delay your dash a bit so you don't land on the second lower bat.
* If he teleports in the air and just hangs there, watch yourself closely and walk away (towards him) from every fire pillar that appears behind you. Make sure you walk slowly enough that the fourth and final pillar isn't directly below NKG, so you can slash twice upwards, OR get an Abyss Shriek in for massive damage if you have enough soul.
* If spikes rise up, position yourself so you don't get hit and use Focus if you're hurt and have enough soul.
* If he does the fireball balloon thing, keep your eyes focussed on the area between him and you and try to jump only when necessary. Jump over the fireballs in a sort of circular pattern, moving towards him at the top of your jump, and away from him when on the ground.
That's two attacks where you can safely attack him with the nail; it's not much, but combined with the Abyss Shriek, he'll go down sooner or later. You can heal during the cloak spikes attack. I'd recommend bringing the Quick Focus charm for that purpose at least. Unbreakable Strength (for your nail slashes) or Shaman Stone (for extra Abyss Shriek damage) are also good.
It's an either or. You could defeat him (Ritual achievement) or banish the troupe (Banishment achievement - either one will get you 1%). If you do decide to banish him, the Grimmchild charm will be replaced with another charm, however.
edit: Isn't Grimmchild only 2 notches?
As far as healing goes, it's doable in 5 different situations (without Quick Focus, but using it will lower the risk of some of them significantly and allow you to heal more masks in some situations):
- during his uppercut, simply dash/walk away from him then heal in that spot as he rises and the flames fall (the spot you should be in will always be safe)
- during the fire pillars, dodge them normally then as soon as the 4th starts to appear quickly move away from it and begin healing, also possible to get off more heals here with Shape of Unn
- during fire bats, stand still and jump over the first low one then begin healing (last one will go over your head)
- during the spikes, just heal in the safe spot
- and of course, during the stagger, which should give you around 3 masks
Otherwise, you could also check out the guides out there for anything you might have trouble with.
Pretty sure it is.
For the dash, just jump, pogo off of his head and shadow dash forward so you don't fall into the trail of fire.
For the uppercut, you have many ways of dealing with this.
1. This is extremely risky and dumb, but my personal way of dealing with it is pogoing off the uppercut for a parry and then hitting him again in the back on the way down, usually being in the clear from any fire.
2.You could simply shadow dash through him, though that leaves you more vulnerable to the fire.
3. Simply moving away from him as he does the initial dash forward and saving your shadow dash for the fire is the safest way to dodge this imo.
When he stands still, I usually pause a bit and move out of the way of every fire pillar so I don't end up cornering myself, I usually hit Grimm 2-4 times on the way depending on how safe it is. (you can get away with even more hits if you want to get risky)
For the fire bats, jump over the first one and shadow dash towards him, this is the second best time to get hits in behind the fire pillars imo.
When he does the spikes, just be sure to be quick on your feet and reposition yourself as they come up. This is the one of the only times I decide to heal, since you can't exactly hit grimm back during this attack.
During the bats, you'll get plenty of time to heal. It's difficult to get that many hits in during the stagger anyway.
The bullet hell attack is just a matter of knowing just how much you can get away with quick hopping and double jumps. Even if you get yourself into the worst of positions, a well placed double jump could get you out of harm's way.
Everyone deals with this boss a bit differently, personally, I think heal strats, spells, and nail arts are too much trouble. I just stick with the ol' reliable nail. It's clearly working since I was able to beat him without getting hit several times.
I reccomend strength and mark of pride, but you may come up with a strategy of your own.
P.S try to stick to the center of the arena as best you can, it'll make dodging/countering attacks easier. (be ready to dodge out of the way when the bullet hell attack happens though.)
I recommend Long Nail / Mark or Bride. Quick Shall is optional. If you want to end this faster, I recommend Unbreakable Strength. I advice against using except during the bat attack. So do not pick Spell Charms. Nailmaster's Glory might also be useful.
Make sure to use Divine to upgrade all your Fragile charms to unbreakable and then visit Leg Eater and then Divine for a surprise ;) You won't be able to upgrade them once Grimm departs because soon after Divine also departs from Dirtmouth. If you complete the Ritual and both Leg Eater and Divine have departed, the broken Fragile charms can no longer be repaired.
It only takes 2 Notches but you need to have that equiped. By the way, when you play Godmaster, as of now at least when equipping the Grimmchild and replaying the Grimm fights, he won't spawn. So I recommend not using it for Pantheons 3-5. Anyway, good luck with your fights. Make sure to upgrade all Masks / Vessels / Nail and collect every available charm first.
First of all, I had to understand what was taking most of my HP.
It was, that whenever he spawned on the ground, I wanted to dash through him, dealing a little bit of damage. Problem was, that almost always he was backing up in such situation, dealing me damage and following it with attack he intended to do. So I had to un-learn doing this...
For few tries I was going with Glowing Womb, but even though it helped me get pretty far, I was always out of soul even when I could heal.
So, in the end I went with: Sharp Shadow (obviously), Unbreakable Strength (so if I hit him, I hit harder), Mark of Pride (so I can reach him when he spawns to far away with bats for example), Steady Body (so I can land more hits).
My main tactic was to:
-When he dashes and jumps up to fire flames: avoid everything,
-When he uses bats: jump over first, dash over second, hit him two times,
-When he hits flames from ground: avoid trying to hit him up to 4 times + one dash,
-When using spikes: heal if possible,
-When changes into bat: heal if possible
I was also trying to bounce of his head when he hits ground and dashes towards me, but I've come to realization, that I manage to hit him properly only 50% of times, for some reason, the rest was when I hit attack a splits/second too early/late.
Anyway, thanks for your tips!
Now I'm off to the Godhome...
