It's a mechanic that's been around for ages in these type of games.
to be fair, i myself spend quite some time before defeating them, and making all the way to the bench felt like soul crushing experience.
once you get good, you will wonder how you even lose before
and then you will struggle with watcher knights...
...and radiance...
...and nightmare king grimm...
...and pantheons...
life is a struggle
Idk how the average person would get that far to suddenly assume that they've found an exception. Giving a negative review for something that the game has tried to teach you literally hundreds of times over by that point? Just lol.
The way back to the mantis lords takes literally a minute (I brought up a video and checked), and you can use it to get some soul to go into the boss with.
As for the OP, pretty sure 99% of enemies in this game deal contact damage, no matter their state, why would that suddenly change?

Besides, something colliding with you is going to hurt.
That is just sucky combat.
Many 2d games would stagger the enemy and make him immune to further dmg, just like yourself. and that creates much more flow and fun if you ask me.
Sorry, but that 's a load. Look. I'm touching my keyboard right now. Am I dying? No, I am not. It turns out touching things normally does not kill you. Touching floors and walls in this game does not kill you. Dropping from the crown of Hallownest does not hurt you. Landing on top of a fat idiot falling down should logically not hurt you. It's fine to argue that it's just the rules of gameplay, but trying to claim it makes sense you get hurt from that is absolutely taking the piss.
There is literally a freaking bench at the Mantis Village.
