I played in the beginnign with the keyboard and by doing so you are handicapping yourself
Using a controller restricts you, whereas with a keyboard, you can map it to fit your hand like a glove. (Ofc, as far as gloves go, feel free to try with the "Power Glove" :p )
.......is what I usually say when this question comes up, when asked about preferences.
In the end, the real answer depends on each individual's personal preferences, what they're used to, etc.
Honestly, I've lost count on how many times questions like this one has been asked. I've witnessed many a flame war (not just on steam) where people rage against eachother regarding keyboard (and mouse) vs controllers.
(I prefer KB myself, but I won't try to convince others that they're making inferior choices. What works for one person might not work for others.)
Take note of this though: If you choose to use a controller rather than the keyboard, many have requested assistance regarding software issues. Anything from getting the controller to work, to that of the controller being the cause of the game crashing randomly.
TL:DR
I like to use the keyboard for this type of games, others like to use a controller.
What's "best" for you depends on your own general preferences.
For shooters, or 3D in general, rotation is key to superiority. Camera/turning speed is limited by the tilt of the controller's stick. The one thing a controller can do for 3D games that a keyboard can't is that of adjusting travelling speed. On keyboard, either you sneak, walk or run. There's (usually) nothing inbetween. But that tiny advantage falls short when compared to the vastly superior turning-speed you'll get from using a mouse. (Ofc, this only applies to 3D-games where the mouse is used for these things.)
The main reason for why I've not used controllers for 2D games (since my SNES way back....) is that I don't have a controller. cba buying a console-controller just for the sake of gaming on a pc, especially when that's all it'd be used for. (Yeah, I said SNES. :p Got a GameCube-controller for my Wii, but don't have a USB-adapter...)
Some games play overwhelmingly better with certain setups, to the point that playing any other way is creating a needless difficulty. FPS games are best played with a KB+M, while platformers are best played with a controller and, honestly, there is no meaningful argument to the contrary.
Get yourself a wired Xbox 360 or wired Xbox One controller and have at it.
That's a big oof right there man
However, I do prefer controller, everyone please put your pitchforks down
Also....
Really? You still use pitchforks? I find them highly inefficient, and as of such, I've traded in all my pitchforks for bolas. A perfectly aimed throw can crush a skull, whereas a pitchfork can merely cause minor puncture wounds. :p (Wanna have some off-topic fun, just for the heck of it? :p )
'Best' is not a matter of subjective comfortability, but objective function. Any number of console players are quite comfortable playing FPS games with a controller because that is all they have, however FPS games are designed to be played with a KB+M because it allows for more precision. Platformers are similarly designed in the opposite direction.
A KB+M setup is best for FPS games because it allows for more precision, objectively, even if a given player is less comfortable with it; a controller setup is best for platformers because it allows for more precision, objectively, even if a given player is less comfortable with it.
Arguments persist because people confuse subjective with objective and are, therefore, unable to recognise the difference between 'this works well for me' and 'this works the best, even if I am not comfortable using it'.
I guarantee it's because this poster has likely played a ton of games with a keyboard and is simply comfortable with it. No one in their right mind would willingly select a keyboard over controller for a game of this type unless they loved the keyboard with a passion.
And, yes, we get that players crush an FPS with a keyboard and mouse but that's because the reticle and aiming in most shooters is designed for a mouse. No part of Hollow Knight was designed around that.
As usual, this discussion comes down to "PC gamer snob" vs normal gamer. They'll never agree.
