The Radiance rant
Okay so don't misunderstand this post. I think The Radiance is actually a very well designed and challenging boss. Not once did I find her to be cheap. She's perfectly balanced imo. I just beat her and it was a struggle but not impossible. That being said, I gotta say, having to go through the Hollow Knight EVERY time was annoying as hell. And not even because he's hard but because he just becomes a nuisance. I only died once or twice against him while trying to beat the Radiance but damn is it annoying to have beat him all the time. I get that it's for lore reasons (the Radiance is in his dream or so I think?) but the option to simply fight the Radiance on her own would be so much better imo because it's such a great fight.

Yeah, I agree with that sentiment. What helped me mentally deal with this rather significant waste of time was to see the hollow knight as stage 1 of the Radiance fight. The weakest form of the Radiance's body, if you will. That way, I was always fighting the Radiance boss no matter what. It might not help much, but sometimes the little things you do to make a slog less sloggy allows for a more tolerable experience.

That's actually an interesting way of looking at it. I guess if we just disregard the Hollow Knight as a standalone boss, it feels better mentally when we go into the fight. You think the devs would ever patch it? Or nah? Perhaps they just want to make the entire ordeal as gruelling as possible hey

I honestly didn't even cared, I just hard tanked HK and fast dps it down since going into the dream for radiance would refill completely the hp.
And overall wasn't bad to practice shadow dash timing which is quite useful for radiance too.

yeah its a poor design choice by the devs but we have to live with it, they dont really seem to listen to fans after something has released

It really is supposed to be a two-stage fight. It tests your mettle with the Hollow Knight, so by the time you start beating him easily and consistently, you should have a chance at beating The Radiance. Besides, the reason why it doesn't immediately start you off on The Radiance after you lose is because it sets you back to your last save and gives you the opportunity to complete other things in Hallownest you might've missed, like mask shards so you can get stronger the next time you try to beat The Radiance.

Honestly when you got through most of the game and are ready to fight Radience, Hollow Knight himself is just a little easy warmup that makes more of a setting for main fight rather than being some actual boss fight. He takes less than a minute to defeat and dreamnail him. And you have bench right next to it unlike some other bosses where journey back to them can take more than a minute.

THe problem for me is not that HK is hard. It's that the fight is so ridiculously different from Radiance that it breaks the flow. You die on NKG, for example, and you can just jump straight back in, saying "I know what I did wrong, I can do it this time". You die on Radiance, you have the HK fight to distract you, and by the time you get past it, you've lost your groove.

But then, I'm the kind of person who walks into a room and instantly forgets why I was there, SEVERAL TIMES IN A ROW... so that might be just me. *shrugs*
