You can kill it after you get mantis claws, but it marks something more important once you have something called the dream nail
I'd argue that it's one of the saddest parts of the game.

Do you really want to know what it is?

That doesn't explain what it is or tell me how I can get to it to kill it, and I have both of those items.

I had assumed you hadn't tried climbing to the room above where you fought it because you didn't know it was an option. It's a pair of grubs crying over the corpse of the false knight.

Do you mean the room with nothing there or nother room?

Another room. Try climbing up the right side wall of the empty room where you can hear the crying. There's a breakable wall towards the center of the room.

Do you not see the breakable wall up there?

Also DON'T kill it. You will want to save it for Dream Nailing to get Soul. Otherwise you will have a horrible time fighting the Failed Champion.

Apologies for the confusion, by the way. I had forgotten that there was a hidden breakable wall, and remembered the location being a bit more obvious than it actually was.

Abyssal Alchemist is right though.
Dream nailing enemies gives you soul, so keeping the grubs alive will help serve as a good source of soul for when you fight the optional boss in that area.

The cracks on this particular breakable wall are especially pronounced, so it should be easy to spot.

Plus, the Failed Champion is one of the few bosses that doesn't replenish Soul when you hit them with Nail. So your options for healing and spellcasting are rather limited in this fight.
You can try Dream Nailing him to regain Soul, but its super risky with this boss. Which is why it is recommended to keep at least the left maggot alive so you can fill your Soul gauge before the fight.

I left them alive then when I died and left the dream world the dung defender crest killed one and the other died to the same thing when I tried to dream nail him, so Im stuch with the jogy blessing or whatever its called.

On the right side of the knight's armor, jump up the platform and wall jump up the wall until you can't anymore. The left portion is the breakable wall.

sorry for the necro but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ i killed them before reading this, how hard is the boss?

I killed them when I met them too. I would say the boss is harder than most, but like almost all the bosses in the game, after several tries I was able to learn his moves.

I killed them too. It's not the end of the world. You just don't have soul filled at the start of the fight but a lot of Dream bosses are like that.

He's definitely the toughest early-game boss and took me a few hours of retries to take down. Though, when I came back to him later, I slaughtered him pretty easy so, he'll become more trivial as the game goes on. Great early challenge, though, and a nice preview of what's to come.
