Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight

Is Carefree Melody useful against Radiance?
Topic question.
I planned to attempt the Radiance boss fight again in my main save file, after completing (with either ending) the Grimm Troupe DLC.
Which one of the mutually exclusive charms (Grimmchild and Carefree Melody) is more effective against Radiance?

Grimmchild for me. Free damage can't be beat
A waste of charm slots in my opinion.
You have better chances if you focus on dodging and healing.
A solid build against the Radiance with this strategy - average player will probably need 3-5 attempts: Unbreakable Strength | Quick Slash | Mark of Pride | Unbreakable Heart
If you good at fighting Hollow Knight, you can kill Radiance with mage build: soul gain up + spell damage + less cost and just do updated "Howling Souls" (forgot its name) repeatedly, just sometimes jump and collect souls (you need to have full souls when enter Radiance, it will be easier) and it will be defeated constantly.
Annd yes - dlc unic charms mostly useless against Radiance.

I would agree that you’re probably better off using neither of them. If I had to pick one of the 2 I’d say Carefree Melody, since if you’re facing Nightmare King Grimm to make Radiance easier you may be doing something wrong.
Grimmchild is actually able to damage Radiance pretty well and makes it easier to focus on dodging if you feel like you can't do both effectively.

I haven't tested Carefree Melody, but I'd take being able to dodge more consistently over having a chance to not take damage for a dodge screw up any day.

That’s true, Radiance is large enough that Grimmchild’s accuracy isn’t an issue.
Grimmchild better than Carefree Melody. Radiance have large hitbox Grimmchild can hit her easily. On the otherside Carefree Melody is not reliable because its RNG and Radiance attack deal 2 mask damage per hit make the Carefree Melody not suitable much for Radiance fight of course you can try it if you confidence enough with your luck.
So, I have tested both on 2 different files and all of you are right about Grimmchild being better.

I tried Grimmchild first. Grimmchild only takes 2 notches, and I combined it with Unbreakable Strength. It was especially useful in phase 4 (the one with platforms suspended in the void).

Then I tried Carefree Melody. It takes 3 notches (I wasn't informed and I thought it only took 2), so I had to swap Strength for Heart, and made a tankier build.
Right from the Hollow Knight, I noticed that even when Carefree Melody's chance to activate is around 60-80%, it's still more unreliable than I expected. Maybe I was just not lucky?
The chance counter seems to reset in between battles, so it's cheese-proof.
I thought it would take more Abyss Shrieks to get to phase 4 of the Radiance, but I didn't notice any difference with that: maybe I just attacked more while tanking hits, or maybe it's just so overpowered it doesn't really matter.
Anyway, phase 4 is much harder when you have to follow the Radiance around.

So, I don't want to mark my own post as the official thread answer. Which one of you should I choose?

I’d say mark Kanra’s as the answer.

Also, for the record I believe Carefree Melody is a base 10% to activate and it goes up by 10 every time you get hit and it doesn’t activate, resetting once it does.
