Where do I get the ability to get through the black walls?

Everywhere I go with a sliver of hope that I figured out where I'm supposed to be going, there is a wall of darkness blocking the way.

Yeah, I have no clue what is and isn't required to beat the game.
The most recent thing I've accomplished is beating the conqueror's trial.

You need to find and fight hornet in the far east of kingdom's edge

Take the thing you get from after that, and go to the bottom of ancient basin.
The door that was closed will now be open to you.
You'll find the ability you're looking for down there to the far east.

Do you have double jump? I think you might need it to get there.

... No, actually it doesn't look like you need that. Assuming you have the map, there should be an area above the spot blocked off by the black barrier that's where you want to follow.

In order to get double jump, you need the crystal heart...

The crystal heart is in crystal peak.
You can use the ability you get from that to cross a gap in the ancient basin to get the double jump.

I don't think you actually need double jump to get the ability to pass through the walls, I think you're just getting turned around in kingdom's edge and are missing the area you need to find.

I should mention that while you don't need double jump, getting out of the area where the shadow-barrier ability is hidden is murder without it.

ohhhh Crystal peak was the place I needed to be the whole time? looks like I did everything except that. Unless there is yet another upgrade I don't know about.

Once you get the Crystal Heart, you should go to the Waterways. Using the Crystal Heart, you can access the Grove hidden within the Waterways. That's where you get the ability to swim through acid.

You don't need double jump to reach the Hornet bossfight, you can try to Nail bouce on Aspids or your Shade. But it is way easier if you just get the double jump, as the enemy AI won't always cooperate.

After obtaining the King Brand from Hornet, head to the bottom of the Ancient Basin. The Brand will open the gate to The Abyss. On the bottom-left of The Abyss, you can get Abyssal Shriek, the most powerful spell in the game, but in order to get it, you need to go to the top-left portion of Fog Canyon and find the Howling Wraith spell first. On the far bottom-right of The Abyss, is the Shade Cloak, which will upgrade your dash, allowing you to phase through Shadow Gates and enemies.
