Stopped playing for a while, forgot what I did and didn't do
Is there any way of knowing which pale ores I've gotten, which items I've picked up on the map, how much essence I have, and where I'm supposed to go next?

I have the coiled nail, I see two Dreamers on the map, I have 8 health masks and 2 extra magic circles. I'm currently in the ancient basin, and I have access to The Abyss. The game doesn't tell me that because I don't have the map for this area; I'm looking at a map on the internet, that's how I know.

I'm not sure what to do next, I would like the best ending since I've been playing so long. I guess I could always make a copy of this save game, if the game allows it so I don't mess anything up.

Any tips and suggestions and direction would be appreciated.

You can see dream essence by going to your inventory and looking next to the dream nail. Your main goals should be to get 900 essence, which will give you a tool that makes exploring and backtracking a LOT easier, and 1700 essence, which lets you finish up one of two major parts to get the true ending. The best ways to get it is from the warrior dreams (which their graves should be marked on the map if you've bought the pins from Iselda), and the dream bosses. (check out the corpses of the False Knight, Soul Master, and Lost Kin)

Otherwise, my main advice would be go where you haven't explored. If you have access to the Abyss, you should be able to buy the map (and maybe some others) from Iselda. Three pale ore are given by the Seer on the way to 1700 essence, the Grubfather, and the Colosseum of Fools. The others are in places you'd need to explore. Other than that, keep filling out that map!

First of all, the only thing you can miss is the basic ending. Whatever else you do, you'll be able to get the other endings without issues since the game doesn't delete your file upon completion, it places you on the last bench while saving all of your progress.

To answer the rest of your questions, the game doesn't openly tell you "which" of the items you've picked up, just that you've picked up a certain amount of them. Sadly this would have to come from your own memory, but we can probably narrow this down a lot.

To begin with, I would recommend checking the map shop and making sure you've gotten every map you can get so far (based on what you said, you could be missing one map, but should be able to get the others, either from the shop or cornifer's locations ingame). The next step would be to check for spots you haven't been to on the map. If you post your current map I can probably narrow down what you haven't picked up some more.

For the Pale Ore, my best guess would be that you've gotten the ones from the seer and the grubfather and either the one from the very top or the one after a bossfight. Would need to see your map to be sure.

As for the essence, it's visible in your inventory right where your dreamnail is. The post above is slightly mistaken as you actually need 1800 to make real progress, not 1700. I would recommend checking the Palace Grounds once you reach 1800 essence, as well as taking a trip to The Abyss at some point.

How do you post your map if it doesn't all fit on screen at the same time?

Could split it up into multiple parts but I don't know if you want to go through the trouble of doing all of that. It would probably help me tell you what you've picked up, although regardless you could go for 1800 essence since you need that either way.

Sorry for the HUGE delay, but I have two copies of the game, one on Steam, and the other on Switch, and I've been playing on Switch.

UNFORTUNATELY, there's no easy way to share screenshots with Switch, so I had to take screenshots, take pictures with a smartphone, and then upload them to the internet in a zip file.

The link is here

https://www.megaupload2.com/668fd3b5742b74e6

I probably shouldn't have taken max size pictures but I'd rather not do it again. It's 40MB. Sorry for all the hassle and I understand if you don't want to download and look at them. I appreciate all the help you've given me so far.

Man, I can't believe how great Switch is for screenshots, then they drop the ball and don't let you hook the system up via USB to PC, or email them to yourself. :(

Oh wow those are great actually, sorry to make you go through all of that. I've had a bit of a look at them and I've found quite a bit of information, but I might still need a few more answers. Long post coming up:

First thing I want to mention is that you are currently only missing the map for one area. I don't know if you've been to said area or not but it seems highly unlikely. One of your vessel fragments is in there, but in order to reach it, you would have to visit the remaining 2 Stag Stations. Besides quite a few unexplored spots in other areas, you are also missing 2 entire sub-areas (The Abyss is one of them). Sub-areas are different in the sense that they are actually part of the map of the main area but are treated as their own zones. This basically means that the reason you don't have a map for The Abyss is because you haven't gone there yet in order to update your map. One of your missing mask shards is in one of those areas.

Regarding the Pale Ores, it actually looks like you've uncovered all of the areas they are found in on the map. It's possible that you've gone through without picking them up, so we might need to double check this. Coiled nail takes a total of 3 Pale Ores to reach, so we know you've definitely picked up 3. The next upgrade requires another 3, so if you currently have none, it's very likely you missed some. More on this later.

I've also done my best to pinpoint the charms you might be missing, but I also don't know which ones you've bought so this is just an estimation based on your map. From what I could see, you would be missing around 15 charms excluding the ones in shops, but I'm unsure about 3 of them.

I'm going to talk about the areas you've been to now and what you should've picked up from them. Obviously the numbers aren't adding up quite right so I'm assuming you may have gone past a few things. I'll put spoiler tags on these and try to keep them in order. This won't include the things I'm really sure you haven't picked up, just the ones you've explored based on your map.

Mask Shards: 4 from Sly, Grubfather for 5 grubs rescued, beating Brooding Mawlek, crossroads Goam challenge, Queen's Station, Stone Sanctuary, Bretta's house, Royal Waterways, Deepnest near Mantis Lords, Crystal Guardian v2, Seer (1500 essence)

If you're still missing 4 shards, there are 2 in the list above that you've probably not gotten yet but been in the area before. The remaining 2 are in places you haven't been to at all.

Vessel Fragments: 2 from Sly, Greenpath, near the Queen's Gardens entrance, crossroads, to the left of the City elevator, above King's Station, Deepnest pogo challenge, Seer (700 essence), Ancient Basin fountain for 3000 geo

Same deal here. If you're missing 3 fragments, 2 of them are in this list and one is in an area you haven't visited at all.

As for the Pale Ores.. I'll need to know if you currently have any at all in your inventory seeing as the areas themselves are very much explored on the map. Besides those areas, you'd also have 3 to get from 2 NPC's and a challenge (I have a feeling this is one you haven't gotten).

I'd also like to know how much essence you have. It's the number next to your dream nail in your inventory. A few things are unlocked by talking to the seer after getting certain amounts of essence. Based on your map, I know you have at least 200, but that's about it.

Listing charms here would take a very long time so I will probably save it for another post later maybe.

I would still recommend visiting the Abyss if you want to make progress towards that specific ending. After you get something important from there, I would personally recommend going back to Queen's Gardens while gathering essence on the way. You're looking to defeat a strong enemy in there, but I would also recommend trying to grab your remaining Stag Stations while you're in the area (they are both close). The other thing you'll want to do is gather up 1800 essence, have a talk with the Seer then look for something you couldn't dreamnail before.

Didn't even think to upload those!

I'll respond again after this, just want to make sure you get the notification.

Here are my charms and items screen

I have a lot of missing charms, and I also can't find the essence trees in the map. I don't see the icons anywhere :( otherwise I'd get them.

Scratch that I see one in deepnest. As far as unexplored areas, some of those involve platforming I've been unable to stay alive completing.

I'm not sure what part is easiest to do next. I'll look at your shard information now.

Where is the abyss map anyway?

Cornifer is missing from the ancient basin / above the abyss and said to go to dirtmouth but I can't seem to find where the map would be in dirtmouth. Have I forgotten something this simple or is the map not available. Iselda and Sly shops are empty.

Oh wow, I actually guessed all of your missing charms except for one (that you get for essence). It seems like you may have indeed walked past one of the Pale Ores since you should have gotten one for 300 essence.

If I remember correctly, the essence trees won't show on the map until you've been there once. There are quite a few around the map, but if you want to gather essence I would suggest trying out the Dream Bosses since they give quite a bit by themselves. For those, check Ancient Basin, where you beat Broken Vessel, the City's Soul Sanctum, where you beat Soul Master, and Crossroads, around where you beat False Knight.

There are also a few Warrior Graves you could do around the place, although I believe you currently haven't been to or can't reach 3 of them. One of them is on your map, one is in the Stone Sanctuary, and another is a few drops down right from Leg Eater in Fungal Wastes.

Most of your missing Charms are in unexplored spots on the map (that's how I was able to guess them all correctly) so I think you'll get quite a few if you simply try to fill out the map. It would probably still be fine to work towards the ending while getting Dream Bosses.

I believe getting those Warrior Graves and the 3 Dream Bosses should put you just a bit over 1800 essence. Getting every whispering root in the game would total 482 essence so while they are nice to get, it'd be better to focus on the bosses instead here.

You already have the map of Ancient Basin. The Abyss is part of that map. It doesn't need you to buy any map, just have to visit the place then sit on a bench to update the map.

I got the Abyss Shriek, the Shade Dash, but I don't have Jonis Blessing so I skipped the health core charm. I'm in howling cliffs now. I killed Gorb, I can't find the map, I can't find a save or travel station. I don't wanna die after beating Gorb, looks like there might be another boss ugh.

Edit nevermind I got cyclone slash, baldurs shell, an essence tree, and the map lol
Jonis blessing done. Now I can get the core in the abyss but I won't do that yet.

Okay so I can't get the stag station. Maybe I should go for city of tears dream boss.

Wait, do I have to beat a boss on the way to the dream boss? I remember this burning room for some reason...

Sounds like you're making a solid amount of progress! You shouldn't have to beat any boss, just the dream boss. The Stag Station will come later.
TakingABreak May 10, 2019 @ 9:48am
I can't beat the watcher knights even with the chandelier trick. Two at a time is a little much :(

Never mind! Got him!

Wait isn't Lucien a dream boss? I killed him and got the cut scene but no essence?

The dream bosses are stronger versions of bosses you've fought before. You might want to check the Soul Sanctum, where you got your dive spell.

Ah i understand now.

Oh God Soul Tyrant is hard.
I didn't even bother so I went to see if false knight is harder or not. Couldn't find him but got another charm notch. Trying to find him now.

Edit okay he's ridiculous too. Great. Dunno what to try next.

OK all 3 are hard. I can hit lost kin a lot but he's got a ton of health apparently. I did get the life core thing from the abyss

Nice job finding all of those. I agree they will take some getting used to but thankfully retries are fast with those. Most people say Lost Kin is the easiest (he does stagger a lot, just watch for blobs) so it could be a good start I think.
