What Happens in Crystalized Mound?

I've died here so many times. Is there anything I'm really missing out on if I just don't go back? Those damn crystal platforms near the top (I'm assuming) keep getting me.

You get an upgrade to a spell and a grub. But the upgrade is really good and getting all the grubs will earn you a decent charm.

I found the grub, but can't find anything else, or a way out :(

There is a snail shaman frozen in a crystal. It will give you the spell. Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact location. I think it's on the middle left of the large tower of platforms.
