Keyboard vs controller
A lot of people (including the devs) recommend controller for this game, and I'm wondering why. I use keyboard for it and have no problem, except that rarely Desolate Dive won't work. What's so bad about the keyboard controls?

Nothing. It's crept in some people's heads that a controller is "just better" for platform games with no basis in reality whatsoever. Part of it may be nostalgia for old consoles as well.

Coming from someone who prefers controller over keyboard in side-scrollers, I think it's just a preferential anecdote. If the developers also prefer controller, I can likely sympathize for any reasons. And if one prefers keyboard over controller in side-scrollers, there's nothing stopping you, here. Just "you do you."

It's all about personal preference. Honestly I am fine with people sharing their opinions as long as they don't state it as facts, which team cherry unfortunately used to do with a pop-up at the start of the game that was thankfully removed in Lifeblood update.

Playing this game with a keyboard would be abysmal. A controller is recommended because it's way better for games like this.

Ahem.

I can actually vouch for keyboard for platformers. I'm more comfortable with controller nowadays definitely, but a couple years back I beat Ori and the Blind Forest with keyboard. I don't think that keyboard is ideal, personally, but it's serviceable enough to have a good time with a game.

As everyone said, it is a matter of choice. I have a controller myself, but I always try to use keyboard and mouse first.

In this game, I choose to play with controller. I find it easier to use the thumb to control jump and attack, and the index to use dash. It is a legacy from Megaman X games that I used to play a lot.

Also, my problem with keyboard and mouse, specifically in this case, is that they don't accept too many inputs at the same time. I had a hard time jumping and trying to press another direction to hit (above or below).

Keyboard seems better for 2D platforming, as arrow keys tend to feel a bit tighter than d-pads, and you don’t really want to be using the analog stick in this game.

The only thing odd are the controls for the different spells, which are a little awkward on both keyboard and controller.

I honestly remapped the keys for both.

On PC:
Z: Jump
X: Dash
C: Attack
Left Shift: Focus
S: Super Dash
D: Dream Nail
Space: Quick Cast
M: Quick Map
I: Inventory

Controller: Xbox/PS4
A/X : Jump
X/square: Dash
RB/R1: Attack
LB/L1: Focus
LT/L2: Super Dash
RT/R2: Dream Nail
B/O: Quick Cast
Y/triangle: Quick map
Back/Option: Inventory

I have the opposite feeling. I bought a controller specifically for some 2D platforming games, and I barely use it for other games.

But I agree with the keyboard is tighter for directions. Sometimes I accidentally hit the "up" or "down" directional when trying to attack an enemy, and I miss the attack, with my d-pad.

The remapping is entirely optional, I felt the position of each command very natural. But it is a wise choice for sure that the devs let us remap our controls, some games just don't allow us to do that.

I guess it just comes down to preference then. For me the only control I changed was Lshift for map instead of tab

whaaa
i tried using keyboard, it feels unintuitive. so i use controller
but i use the analog the entire time (10h playtime) and i find it comfortable ._.

for the platforming part, i dont have any trouble.. yet (?)
will it become a problem for later content though?

White Palace if you want the other endings. And some endgame bosses get to where you’ll really want the precision.

With platformers, it's always personal preference. In theory, a good mechanical keyboard with low profile switches will give you the best response times, but honestly in a game like this it does not matter at all. Just do whatever you feel more comfortable with.

I personally prefer controller, my girlfriend of the other hand finished the game just fine using her keyboard
