Aside from the hit-and-run tactic, you can try to lure out an attack and hit it with magic, or try hitting it with your spin attack if you've learned it.
I realized the whole back-and-forth motion with them (if you don't attack) was intentional and I'd apparently missed this out of fear of how dangerous they are. I felt like an idiot.
No, I felt stupid for not realizing that the game gave you a method of beating them that seemed deliberate and obvious. So, I felt stupid for not noticing it for so long. I was otherwise brute-forcing killing them, and it always felt like I was missing something.
I'd rather feel smart than stupid about it. :D If things were obvious we wouldn't miss them. Give yourself a pat on the back. *pat-pat*
