It's not really bad for your GPU. That's what it's made to do. However, it might cause the fans on your GPU to run faster than necessary, which makes noise.

If you want to reduce the FPS, there's a Config.ini file located at
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Hollow Knight\hollow_knight_Data
(assuming you installed Steam in the default location and installed Hollow Knight in your main Steam folder) that controls what the frame rate cap limits your FPS to. It could be that the frame rate cap in that config file is set to 400 or -1 (which means no frame rate cap, even if you turn it on in-game; yes, this is stupid). I would recommend either setting the frame rate cap in that config file to 120, or if you don't mind a tiny bit of input lag, turning on VSync.

Thanks for the reply I'll give that a try

yep it was set to 400 in the files
thanks that fixed it :)

Do you have Vsync enabled? Having that on caps the framerate directly to your monitor’s refresh rate. This also gets rid of screen-tearing & micro-stutters.

Also, having both this & the frame cap option turned on conflicts with each other. One will turn the other one off

Wish I would’ve known this while I was playing :steamfacepalm::steamfacepalm:

yep its always good to ask because most of the time someone on the internet will have an answer to a problem :D
Thanks Boksha

You're welcome.

It's a bit of a shame this isn't documented; I think there should have been a slider in the game's own menu tbh.

When the option was added into the game, I'd assume it would just cap the game @ 30fps. I'd assumed that it just didn't do anything. mine was set to like 476 in the config file. :I

Vsync is bad. It's causing input delays. You can use RivaTuner to cap fps.

& what? receive a jagged line that goes across the screen? No thank you. Besides, the input lag is BARELY noticeable anyway, especially with higher refresh rates

To me, VSync at 60 Hz feels absolutely terrible, like you're permanently drunk. Screen tearing on the other hand is barely noticeable to me, if you cap your frame rate to something at least twice your refresh rate. I wouldn't cap my frame rate to exactly my refresh rate though, because that would guarantee a visible tear AND randomly cause the same input delay as VSync.
