Here's some comforting news. 1600 geo isn't that much. You'll get charms later on that double your geo gain and also charms that gather all of said geo for you. In addition, I lost around 2.2k geo on my first run before I bought the lantern. I just kept playing the game without grinding and still got the lantern eventually without once breaking my pace just for the sole sake of saving up geo. In that play through, I eventually lost around 6-7k geo permanently. You should be fine one way or another.

There can only be one soul at a time. This means if you die while trying to retrieve the first soul, the first soul will disappear along with all the money it had.

So yeah, your money is gone.

Thank you for answering and sorry about my grammar I typed it out in a hurry
Yeah, don't concern yourself too much with losing it. I lost about 8k awhile back. Eventually you'll get to the point where you have too much geo and nothing to spend it on.
I spent four hours getting my geo (trying to get enough for certain stuff). ♥♥♥♥ this, I am done with a game that has so little respect for my time and effort it would take all of it away just because I am not a pixel-perfect platformer.

What, are you gonna cry about it? Just get the stuff later when the stronger enemies drop more money. The game doesn't respect or disrespect anything; it's a game. If you actually spent 4 hours trying to make enough money to get something, then you're obviously doing it too early (or you're trying to buy multiple things and you wanted to get them all at the same time after you got all of the money, for some reason); you made that decision on your own, my guy.
(Edit: Also, don't necro, please)

Don't worry pal, I just found out this when I lost over 6k :((((
It really does suck losing money, but as it's been said charms can help you get it back. Plus, certain areas of the map have "richer" bugs that give more money when you kill them so you'll earn it back soon enough, even if it feels impossible earlier in the game. (Worst I lost was 20k geo. Oof.) But yeah- if you die before killing your shade, then the money is gone. Later there is a way to "summon" shades back too, in a safer environment. Trying to be spoiler free but reassuring.

just lost more than 4.8k, got all of it by selling stuff to Lemm and now its f***ing gone :(((
something to note for the future.
rancid eggs can be used to call your lost soul to you. helpful if you're in a tight spot.

you need to use a simple key to unlock the door at the far right side of the town of Dirtmouth. that gives you access to a npc that will summon your lost soul to that location, in exchange for a rancid egg.
You die the second time before defeating your shade spawned near the site of your death, the geo you had on that shade is lost permanently.

Lucky for you, geo can always just be farmed. It's just a matter of dedication.

There is also technically a bank in the game that allows you to store some geo which will persist no matter how many times you die. She is Millibelle the Banker, stationed at the bottom of the Fog Canyon, or to the left of the Queen's Station (top left sub-area of Fungal Wastes). But you won't find her of much help as there's a max storage cap of 4,500 geo. Did I say 4,500? Because I actually meant 2,500, as putting in more than that will ensure it closes permanently later as she takes your money and runs away. You can find her later in another area and beat the money out of her (without killing her ofc) and apparently with interests too, but the bank service will remain closed for the rest of the game iirc. So if you have to use it, make sure to withdraw frequently so the amount in the bank never exceeds 2,500, which by late game, is more or less an insignificant amount to grind for hence why I said it isn't really helpful.

Lastly, if you have no idea where your shade is or if its location is way too tricky (sometimes it's spawned in hazard zone that you can't get to without dying and too far to lure it out to kill), there's another mechanic to safeguard against this problem. Acquire a Simple Key and get to Dirtmouth and run all the way to the right and you'd find a cave that open-able with a Simple Key. Once you do and enter it, Confessor Jiji will be awakened. Satisfy his requirement, which should be easy to fulfill if you explore properly and he will summon your shade into the cave to kill at your leisure with nothing around to distract you.

But really, just be careful about getting to the shade and not die before reaching it, you will never lose money. And even if you did, farming geo comes easy in this game towards the end where there's a place dedicated to earning lots of money. You'll know when you see it. That's where you go and grind geo in late game.

Don't sweat too much over geo. It's a fake stake.

That's for in case someone needs to read it.

Telling players that there's a bank in the game and its very limited mechanics is not spoiling anything. Even the "plot twist" is so minor it shouldn't even really need a spoiler mask, which I might add, I've put on anyway. Let's be real, elaborating mechanics are NOT spoilers and tiny, throwaway, and inconsequential joke side plot points really are not on anyone's radar for spoiler alert (which once again I might add, I did put on the spoiler mask).
