The Hunter
Say, does anyone have clues as to who the Hunter might be (his origin/connections/etc)? I am really interested in knowing how he came about and his connetion with the Dream Nail :V

I'm not sure of any connections with the Dream Nail, other than one of the entries in the journal being a quote from the Seer who gave you the Dream Nail.

Something to note is that the only opportunity to Dream Nail him is when he gives you the Hunter's Mark, since you can't reach his head otherwise.

The Hunter's exact origins are unknown, though there are theories that he may be related to the huge ancient bugs like the ones you see in Queen's Gardens, Kingdom's Edge, and The Abyss.

I think that he is based on some kind of giant stick-bug(usually just called "walking-sticks"), due to the way his body looks, and his insistant use of leaf-based camoflauge.

Thank you very much! That was much informative)

I hope the devs will add something about him in the future DLC(s).

Thats just amazing, 5 years later i can't find anything more than this anywhere, and most threads are locked already ; seeing that seemingly no one else made those connection is kinda making me doubt my logic, but here goes

The hunter is the black wyrm. I would not think it is the coliseum shell though, because it would prolly mention it in a way or another if it were the case ; but the fangs on its "hood" matches those of the said shell and give me the same impression than the pale king's horns when compared to the pale wyrm's ones ;
That would explain how it is so totally unaffected by the infection (though the pale king did retreat in dreamland to escape radiance, and cut content does make him say "false one you cannot reach me here", but maybe that is related to him and the mothgod being both gods of light battling for the crown). He warns the knight, upon receiving the Hunter's mark, that it will imprint on it forever and become part of him, which can reasonnably be compared to the lightgods' impact of most bugs. (and if it was part of him from the beginning that could explain the behaviour of the bugs inside of the coliseum, just saying)

He also mentions siblings, and hunting each other in the nest, so I think thats not too far-fetched to imagine that later on, after whity shed its shell and tried to build a whole civilisation from beasts and "enlightened" moths, blacky poped up for another brawl. As he claims to have tried to have a companion (when talking about god tamer) but was unable to refrein from fighting it to compare strengths, so would he with his kin (maybe even his sibling ?

But thats a stickman with a bush on its head ! I hear you say. And the pale wyrm is a pointy dwarf, i answer. So my thoughts are, blacky comes around, finds the (not so) everlasting kingdom of hallownest ; for some reason(s) the knights of the pale wyrm (at least) fight with him (once again, the coliseum shell seem a perfect fit for this but given the lack of any hint on its part this is for everyone to decide for themselves i guess) ; he ends up defeated because hey, savage but not enough to take down the whole of hallownest's finest, yada yada, then he sheds its shell !

After all whity did shed and reduce drastically in size, and completely changed anatomically speaking, excepted pour the crown/horns/fangs/etc ; ans who's to say the fangs on his hood aren't his ? After all there is some... I think saliva... On the items he gives to the knight. And i don't recall seeing any external eye material on whity's oldest corpse we meet ingame ; no proof by itself, but no disproof either.

So methink after the battle, he started hiding in this "second shape" either to reform or just to regain strength ; as nothing/no one ever tells us that a wyrm, once transformed, can revert to their former shape, or how long it takes/how it works if even possible.

TLDR : Hunter is black wyrm, sibling of pale king, and went the same kind of transformation (if only the pale king was naked ! We could see if he had limbs in his new form...)

There ! Something like 5 years too late but now I have the satisfaction to know this idea is somewhere on the net.

^ Bruh the thread is almost old enough to attend primary school.

Also Hunter is definitely not a wyrm, he's too small for that. Hunter also doesn't grant intelligence to surrounding bugs, charm and/or then raise bug civilisations as is the case with wyrms and similar god-like entities (Wyrms, Radiance, Abyss, etc). All his story boils down to them killing their siblings as part of its family rivalry/life cycle and has been hunting solo ever since for an unknown length of time which were implied to be extremely long considering the Hunter's Journals have entries and comments about things that are very, very old.

Given their size and its presumed advanced age, the closest comparison for the Hunter is the giant dead bugs that you sometimes see in the background, such as the dead giant Nailsmith where you find Quick Slash charm. The Hunter is probably just some living fossil from an ancient era, still stuck in the hunter-gatherer age while the rest of the world had not only gone through civilisation but also its total collapse; meanwhile dude's just chilling.

Hunter is probably just a really old bug that's gotten so bored with hunting they're now raising future hunter in the form of the Knight to pass the time. You know the Hunter has some serious ancient age and wisdom up their hoodie when they troll the Knight with fake-out boss fight not just once but at least 2 times and completely gotten away with it.
