I did a preliminary esarch on this issue. It seems to require different solutions for different games, but one problem I saw recurring was with Windows 10 users. I don't own a Win 10 system, so you'll have to bear with me here if I get any details wrong.

Some people with a couple different games have had issues since the release of what is called the Fall Creator's update. They seemed to have resolved the issue by changing compatability options.

First, locate hollow knight from your local files. If you open up your steam library, find hollow knight, right click, go down to properties, then you'll find a tab for "local files". Click on "browse local files". That should open up the location of the executable of the game. right click on that game (by default named "hollow_knight.exe"), click properties, then under compatability check "disable fullscreen optimizations".

This option is not a thing for my Win7 system so I'm just basing it off someone else's instructions. I hope that works for you.

I think you're onto something here. I started having issues after a windows 10 update, on this and a couple other games. After two weeks of troubleshooting with the developers, I decided to just roll back my update and now all of the games that had launch issues run with no problem.

Now I just have to never update again! :D

It's very frustrating when something as critical as an OS update causes numerous problems. I hope the guys at Microsoft get their shy t together and release an update to their update.

This fixed it for me as well, the only things I had changed from the default RTSS settings was the color and location of the on-screen display. If anyone has the same problem give it a try and press the red reset button on rivatuner.
