It has Soulsy elements, but it’s a lot less like Dark Souls than a lot of people say imo. The death mechanic is nearly identical, but aside from that the game is more of a really well done metroidvania than a 2D Dark Souls (the light metroidvania elements of Dark Souls notwithstanding).

Just know that there will be a lot of backtracking if you play blind, and it’s rather light on story (on the surface at least), but if you’re okay with that then I really can’t recommend this game more.

I second the above post in that this game is not like Dark Souls. This is very much in the vein of Metroidvania. If you haven't played many metroid or castlevania games, they are strong in nonlinear exploration and revisiting old areas using newfound abilities. As a general illustration, you'll come across a ledge above you that you can't reach. It's too high and your jump is too short. You later gain the ability to climb walls (more like jump from the wall repeatedly to simulate climbing), then you'll remember about this spot you couldn't reach early in the game, you go there and suddenly 5 or 6 new rooms open up to you because you can now access that ledge. Every time that happens you get a hit of dopamine, and if it just so happens to coincide with the discovery of a new zone, it'll happen again. The music also is very closely married to the mood of the environment and will dynamically shift if you move into a dangerous area.

In short get this game if you enjoy nonlinear exploration, deep but sparse narrative, bosses with patterns. Some of them have multiple phases, some don't. My memory is bad, so I can't remember which of those two categories holds the majority of the bosses in this game, but each boss has so much character I think you'll enjoy them all.

Buy this game if you like exploring and backtracking to areas to uncover stuff you couldn't do earlier in the game. You figure out pretty much everything in this game by yourself. There is very little hand-holding. You pick up subtle things and it's wonderful.

I highly recommend playing without looking up any guides.

I've never played Dark Souls so I can't say how similar they are but from what I've read the death mechanic is like Dark souls but not much more in this game.

This game is also not super hard like Cuphead. The exploration and sense of wonder is really gripping and bosses are not undefeatable or RNG nonsense and you usually seem to have alternate places to explore and level up a bit more and not get stuck at a boss.

However I highly recommend this game. The best metroidvania genre game in PC in my opinion.

Uh, narratively the devs are obviously fans of Dark Souls but it's like, not as bad as Dark Souls actually is in narrative so that's a plus.

Gameplay-wise it's nothing like Dark Souls. Action is far crisper and sometimes twitchy, and it's a true metroidvania (but then, Dark Souls is sometimes confusing as hell).

Hollow Knight is one of the best games to have come out this year, and for me personally, among the greatest games I've ever played. You won't regret buying it.
