Not that great of a game in my personal opinion, but if you liked TBoI you might enjoy it.
Like subnautica, it mostly only matches your criteria in the depths and endgame, but even though things are brighter and sunnier throughout a lot of the rest if it, it's still a great metroidvania.
Oh yeah i know that feel dude ^^
The game looks interesting :)
* Axiom Verge - old school metroidvania style game. Has a very neat creepy wibe to it with its own creepy story to go for. Loved it, replayed it and looking forward for the next encounter.
* Ori and the Blink Forest - This is a must. The game is beautiful (Game awards 2015 - Best Art Direction award), with a strong soundtrack that combines with the story very well, that cna make grown men cry. The gameplay is fun as well (again, metroidvania style), but the key points of this game is: story, art and sountrack.
* Dead cells - This is an interesting game that I have been playing once in a while. It is a rouge-like metroidvania game where will you will die a lot. I mean a lot as it is almost the key point of the game. In short, you go around levels, die, unlock stuff then die some more, git gud while dieing until you don't die less and beat the current final boss. Then do it again. The thing is, after you die, you start from the first level, but the good thing is, that the levels can be completed in 2-10 mins (depending on your speed and such) and the stuff you unlocked stays permanent (unless you die before reaching a checkpoint). Note, it is still on Early Access, but has over 95% possitive rating (over 10k votes).
* Dust: An Elysian Tail - umm... this is another metroidvania game (I am sucker for those type of games). A fun game, good art, fun characters and interesting story.
* Furi - Ok, totaly different game, but you might like it. It is a boss fighting game, hack & slash kind of type. Now, why it is on this list? Soundtrack (Synthwave type), hack & slash, Boss rush (every boss is a good challenge, depending on your skills), awesome art style that works with the soundtrack and simple, but still quite good story.
At the moment, that is all I can think of, but I think that is enough to go around.
Cheers.
