why do i randomly sometimes get one essence when killing an enemy???

This happened to me too... Also the coinstones stopped giving out coins... I get like 1 or 2 if I am lucky.

Because you can spend essence, and the game needs a way to let you get it back.

Truth spoken, devs made all bugs have a slim chance of dropping one essence back when they added the dream gate.

Random, but a very small chance for all creatures.

To be more specific, the chance of essence dropping normally is about 1%, and if you've used dreamgates it becomes 4% until you're back at your original number.

It's 0.5% normally, 1% with the Dream Wielder Charm equipped, 2% after using the Dream Gate, and 4% with the Charm equipped after using the Gate.

This is a feature that was first added in to the game in version 1.1 (Hidden Dreams), to compensate for the cost of using the Dream Gate ability.

I wonder if the Dream Shield charm has any effect on the chance of Essense?

Having used Dream Shield for much of the game (I just like it... it feels like a companion), I don't think it does.

I know the percentages are too small to reliably tell, but I think I received 3 or 4 essence whilst using Dream Shield or neither Dream Charm, and while using Dream Wielder (not all that much in total, but for parts of the game where it was useful) in total I recevied about 5 essence.

Bear in mind that 90% of the time using Dream Shield was without Dream Wielder - after having acquired the Dream Nail of course.

Again, percentages are too low to reliably tell whether this was pure chance or indicative of any changes the Charms provide - but I think it's safer to assume only the Dream Wielder affects it (considering the description which states it aids in Essence collection).
