That was probably the last game I've enjoyed as much as Hollow Knight. In terms of structure, difficulty, tone, and story it has a lot in common with HK. Not a side-scrolling platformer, though, so vastly different gameplay.

Beautiful artwork, and quite difficult too.
But Valdis Story is VERY good.
Its combat is a little closer to Devil May Cry than typical Metroidvania. I think you'll die a lot more in Hollow Knight, but Valdis Story has a similar difficulty.

- Shovel Knight
- Guacamelee
- Hyper Light Drifter
- Dead Cells
- Axiom Verge
- Ori and the Blind Forest
Shovel knight is more like an amazing platformer than a metroidvania but in terms of how well the game is made it's definitely on par. Also gives you a ton of content.
Hyper Light Drifter despite what the salt brought in is actually a great game aswell and probably just as difficult if not more in some areas. It plays more like a top down zelda that's fast paced with tight controls.
Guacamelee and Axiom are both great metroidvanias. Axiom is essentially metroid with unique guns, if you loved metroid you'll love this. Guacs more beat em up metroidvania with comedy sprinkled in and a little shorter, I really enjoyed it.
Ori and the Blind forest is a great metroidvania with a world class soundtrack and great story. It also has WAYYY better platforming than Hollowknight but the combats almost non-existant and the bosses are essentially platforming sequences that are very well-made. Worth picking up for sure.
Dead cells is more rogue-like but still great at what it does.
Dude talks about how easy Hyper Light Drifter is, he couldn't even beat it. Also how is that game any more Dark Souls than Hollow Knight? They both are their own great games. Sounds like you are a little salty for not getting far in it.
OCARINA OF TIME SUCKS! SO DOES SUPER METROID!
What are you talking about? I beat HLD a couple days after it came out. It's 'retro' hipster trash that leans on film school cliches to appear less vapid and empty than it actually is. Looks nice. I haven't tried it since it got the 60fps upgrade, which is honestly mean of me considering how much I trolled it and its fans for not running at 60fps. It's sort of like Furi, which I do need to finish, with irrelevant bs between boss fights. And much worse boss fights, from what I remember.
It's pretty much purely a Souls Clone. Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania with Souls elements.
Oh I almost forgot about Owl Boy! it's that 25$ platformer that was well received early on, but even after almost a year the lowest sale was at 17$, is it really that worth it?
Other than what's mentioned here, there is La-Mulana and Wings of Vi both are even more challenging than HK if you're into that. But La-Mulana in particular is very memorable with lots of different themes, you'll probably need a guide for its progression puzzles though.
Also while Dead Cells is different enough than HK, I think it should still be a must check by any HK fan once it's released.

I dunno whether it's a good game or not. I've watched a review that says it has good ideas, but ends out kind of boring by virtue of being too easy.

But not having played it myself I can't give you my own opinion.
