That platforming section is your chance to get used to wall-jumping combined with air-dashing, which you'll be using a lot in the game; you'd have to master that sooner or later anyway.
If you beat the boss of Fungal Wastes, exploring enough of the area past that boss will net you an item which allows you to use the trams, and you can take the tram in that area to a new area below the City and climb up to the City (although the climb is also a bit of platforming with a bit of a hard jump at one point).
Edit: I'm fairly certain that you can since I skipped past dung defender on my last run.
Also spoiler editing.
Re-edit: nevermind, that way requires an ability from inside the city, it does let you skip the waterways though
You can also skip that platforming if you use the tram pass to go to the last tram station at the right. The most platforming there would be jump from platform to platform with little to no risk ans you would enter the city from the right side unlocking a stag station in the way
That was my first thought as well, but it doesn't really help TC with their dilemma. It does, however, let you completely skip over the Royal Waterways (at least temporarily) which are a pain anyway, and means you don't need to use a simple key to enter.
I don't know if you already know this, but just in case, it might be helpful to know that you can dash off of a wall while hanging onto it, you don't have to always jump off of a wall or move away from it first. Very often in spiked walljump puzzles the answer is simply to dash straight off of the wall when you are correctly aligned with the next safe spot, and there's no need for difficult platforming tricks, just a matter of timing.
I don't know how helpful that is to you, or if you'd prefer to just go around after all, but I thought it would be worth mentioning. As I recall it the segment before the City of Tears is slightly more difficult than some other segments, but easier than rescuing Bretta in Fungal Wastes, so once you are more familiar with the actual mechanics of walljumping it won't feel so bad anymore.
Once you get the item in Crystal Peak, you can actually just use super dash above Salubra's shop to get into the lower half of Resting Grounds and immediately gain access the right side (and therefore all) of the City, rather than just the left side like you do through the "main" entrance.
Desolate dive comes from the boss inside city of tears which kind of defeats the purpose of asking how to get in
