I recommend you attempt to explore as much as you can in the darkness. Later, you can buy an item the Lumafly Lantern from Sly to see in the dark.

There is an item for that, try to search for that.
Note: Don't search too hard.

There are two levels of darkness. There is the darkness where you can still see a few feet ahead of you (in a place called the Deepnest, in particular), and there is another darkness where you can barely see at all and every jump is a blind jump where you are guessing at platforms.

You can explore the slight darkness freely if you wish, as it isn't a bit deal. But the heavy darkness is near impossible without already knowing the layout of the room, because if you hit any spikes you won't be respawned on the last safe platform you touched, but instead all the way back at the entrance of the area.

Also, another reason not to explore the heavy darkness is because you will not be able to interact with any background objects like toll booths and such, so you'll be wasting your time more often than not.
