I really...REALLY hate Deepnest. But that's ok?
For a world that comprises entirely of bugs, I didn't really get the 'buggy' vibe for most of the enemies and npcs in this game. You could probably replace most of them with characters from Mario or Kirby and outside of the obvious external differences, I feel like they wouldn't really lose too much 'creepy-crawly' factor from it?

Then I came across Deepnest and it hit every insectoid high-note in my book. Those little bugs that burrow into the ground. They would so much more ease my nerves if they would only come back up in predictable fashion, but they don't. You have to jump to a different ledge before they spawn above you at irregular intervals. It's the uneasy feeling that they're not really dead, but you can't will them to die either, much in the same way when you fail to kill a cockroach in your real home and there's an uncomfortable tension knowing they're somewhere making a brood.

Then there's those zombified parasitic enemies. Those things actually scurry around like bugs, and I'm crazily whacking away at those things in full fight-or-flight mode rather than routinely killing yet another enemy. And then there's the matter of the horrible visibility in the whole zone. You can't really see more than a foot in any direction, so the entire time I'm white-knuckling my controller and I can't even breathe easily.

Well played Team Cherry. Well played. I genuinely hate this zone, but it's because you did too damn good.

Nice post there. By the way, when you mentioned that you "can't really see more than a foot in any direction" - have you already purchased the lantern from the shop in Dirtmouth? It makes the place so much easier and this is the main area it is intended for. Though it isn't required, it helps out a lot.

Dirtmouth doesn't sell any lanterns for me at the moment, but I know now that that's a thing I'll keep an eye out for it for sure. Thanks for this!

Sly is the one that sells the lantern, but is quite expensive.

You have to meet Sly "somewhere" in the Forgotten Crossroad. So that he can open his shop in the Dirtmouth

I wear headphones and hate how disproportionately loud the giant indestructible worms are that crawl horizontally/vertically. They are as loud as the loudest other sound, yet their crawling sound lasts for numerous seconds so you end up deafened!

You cannot regen your health at any spot in Deepnest so simply. Three things that are most likely to happen if you do:
1. Those DAMN ANNOYING LITTLE FAHKTARD
2. Spitting spiders.
3. Where did you come from oh-f*ck-♥♥♥♥-is-that-a-spike-pit-dammit!!!!:flowey:
I'm more surprised on how did Zote get in and get out of that place..... F*ck Zote:zote:

I think you both encapsulated my feelings exactly. I wear a headset when I do gaming so those centipedes are incredibly loud. And zote, if he died there because I had forgotten about him somehow, it wouldn't be the worst thing I think? lol.

Totally agree. I also hate and love Flukemons in waterways, whose greed and clinging to life make shudder and deep impression on me. It makes even feel mystery of real biology. So nice work.

Totally agree, that particular sound effect could do with being toned down a bit - it actually kinda of destroys the claustrophobic creepy vibe the place otherwise gives off.

Deepnest is a really fantastically designed area. It makes me immensely uncomfortable too, but in all the right ways. The ambience, the visuals, the level design, and the enemies are all tailored to reinforce the feeling of tense claustrophobia. It's easy to just say "this is a place the residents of this world fear", but a game like Hollow Knight really makes you experience those feelings first hand. It's a shining example of how to craft atmosphere and immerse your player in the setting.

To add to this, you can fairly easily reach that somewhere. He is inside a hut in that area.

Lmao. You reached deepnest without the lantern? That's a lot of game you covered without it, might want to explore the previous areas a bit before moving on.
Nicholas Steel Jul 25, 2017 @ 10:04am
You can reach Deepnest before getting the Wall Climb ability iirc which is extremely early in the game.

I have done that. After beating The Mantis Lords i went straight into Deepnest, and discovered like 40%-50% of the map. but I realized that i can't go futher more so i went back to dirtmouth and explore Crystalpeak.
P.s. i died a lot due to the cockroaches and the flying thing that shooting out cockroaches.

Deepnest is still better than White Palace. All those traps, makes me shudder going again in there
