I'm finding an awful lot of similarities between The Hollow Knight and Knight Artorias the Abysswalker from Dark Souls.
I don't mean it in a bad way,I actually love that since Dark Souls is one of my favorite franchises.Like, both were knights dutied with sealing an infection, both are renown throughout the kingdom for their heroics, and both kinda actually failed to acomplish their task, and got plagued from that infection. And well, both are really badass.

This is one of the things I really adore about Hollow Knight. In terms of its overall tone and atmosphere, it's the most Dark Souls game since DS1 -- and it manages to accomplish that while still establishing its own unique identity. Many games in recent years have attempted to imitate DS1, and while many of them are a lot of fun, none have ever really felt like they've gotten it in the same way Hollow Knight does. The devs clearly understood how to utilise the core concepts that made DS1 so memorable rather than just imitating the window dressing as so many other titles (some even within the same series) have done.

+1 to that.

The only thing missing that would amke this even more Dark Souls, is random enemy loot other than Geo.
Also the general design of the Hollow Knight resembles Artorias a lot. The way they hold their swords, even the swords themselves look alike. Their bent and broken, almost limp posture.
When I first saw the Hollow Knight I immediately thought of Artorias

"its the dark souls of its genre"

Can everyone just stop comparing games to each other and enjoy them for what they are?
I mean I'm just sick of that quote and people who tag "soulslike" to everything
Don't get me wrong I've played my fair share of darksouls, i'm just sick to everything and their mother getting compared to it.

I'm just sick of it because none of the 3 Dark Souls nor Bloodborne are hard (excluding optional content, Kalameet and Dark Manus can go get ♥♥♥♥♥♥). Demon's Souls however...

Demon's souls isn't that difficult either even in soul form.

When I see threads saying this game is like dark souls in a good way, I think 'right on! That's so true!' When I see threads saying this game is like dark souls in a bad way, I think, 'WTF this game is nothing like dark souls! Go away dark souls fan boy!'

Lol, jokes aside, I don't like comparing any game to another game because that frame of reference might not exist for every new player. Also, when the referenced game has conveniences not present in this game, it really hurts the experience, e.g. 'Why does dark souls have such and such convenient thing but hollow knight doesn't?'

Hollow Knight takes a lot from Dark Souls both in storytelling and in athmosphere, but as it was said above, It does so in a unique way. It is not like a copy of dark souls, it is a completely different game which achieves the same feeling in the player.

HK is a soulsborne game in that you drop your currency when you respawn, besides actually respawning itself instead of gameover'ing, and the player character being hollow, undead.

Has nothing to do with difficulty or any such nonsense.

One could even say HK is the game where you control Solaire the sunlight guy, because you look like a bug, and are hollow, just like he with the maggot on his head.

Literally the only connection HK has to Dark Souls is the oppressive atmosphere and the general [lack of] storytelling. Both games have a lot of their lore dumped through optional dialogue or sidestuff that is easily missed/overlooked.

Aside from that aspect, HK and Dark Souls is nothing alike. I agree with arejang and others ... comparing everything to Dark Souls really, really needs to stop since it's gotten to the point where it doesn't even make sense. I'm a Soulsborne fanboy and I'm really getting sick of it lol. IMO, the only "Soulslike" games that have come out recently are Salt and Sanctuary and Nioh.(Oh man Nioh is soo much better than Dark Souls lol... well combat/storywise, it fails in the exploration/atmosphere area though.)

They actually did the opposite:

Artorias walked into the abyss for his kingdom and that was his sacrifice.

The hollow knight not only did not walk into anything but contained the light inside and that was his sacrifice.

one walked into the dark, the other took the light within himself.

Artorias was one of the great knights of Gwyn while The Hollow Knight not only wasnt even considered one of the Knights but it was an unknown being, no one besides the king and the queen, the dreamers, and mmaybe the most loyal servants knew anything about him.

i actually think they are the opposite from one another.

It was stated in a podcast that the similarities to dark souls are because hollow knight is based in older games dark souls may be based on aswell.

That is not true, there is even a huge statue of him in the middle of the City of Tears, he was treated like Artorias, he made a sacrifice which cost his life, and their people tought they have succeded, while it truth they both failed.
Crowley42 Jan 9, 2018 @ 12:25pm
Also, Artorias failed because he was protecting his doggo while the Knight failed because the Pale King had feelings for him, so basically both of them were defeated by their feels.
