Any "recomended" path of progression?
Haven't been this lost or felt like I "shouldn't be here yet" in a game since...well frickin' forever.

Great game so far, pretty hard though, frustrating at times.

Anyway I felt the game lead you this way early on, which wasn't really optimal:

Forgotten Crossroads -> Greenpath -> Fog Canyon -> Fungal Wastes -> Deepnest / or City of Tears

Like, I ended up beating Mantis Lords, then going into Deepnext WOEFULLY unprepared, so I had to farm money for a light charm (1800 geo) to progress, went so far that I got to the point of pulling my hair out with the enemies and location, so I left and went to the City of Tears, then stumbled upon a waterway with a key, then got lost down there, died, ended up back on a bench near Queen's Station, then I ended up wandering into the Crystal Mines or whatever they're called and stumbled upon the Dream Nail.

So basically now I have the Dream Nail and now I'm wondering where the hell I should go. I went back to the Deepnest and "killed" the Dreamer there, but I'm at a loss. I have so many areas in previously visted places that I cannot do anything with becuase there are black energy gates or acid pools blocking something.

Oh and what triggered the Forgotten Crossroads to become infected?

Well, gotta admit, you pretty screws up the optimal exploration order at there xD
I think you explored major areas too soon. You might want to "100%" current areas you're at before proceeding to the next major area.

I cant 100% current areas because I seem to be lacking certain abilities

Well, I don't really mean "explore every corner" at there.

You simply just need to explore whatever parts you can before moving on to the next major area. You know, filling the map as much as possible.

My personal recommended path of progression for the areas you've explored is as follows: Crossroads -> Greenpath -> Fungal Wastes (for wall climb) -> City of Tears (for nail upgrade) -> Crystal Peak (for the ability you get there) -> Resting Grounds (getting Dream Nail) -> Royal Waterways (for the item you get there that needs the Crystal Peak ability to get) -> Deepnest (because it's massive and easy to get lost in).

I spent wayy too much time lost in the game. I couldnt find the crystal peaks upgrade for the life of me so I explored literally the rest of the game that I could before I gave up and asked for hints from my friend. I spent about 16-18 hours just exploring and collecting stuff, luring enemies to areas that required a double jump so I could skip a bit and explore more.

My tips.
Crystal peak ability > Ancient basin ability > Royal waterways stuff/ability > Kingdom's edge story > Bottom of ancient basin story/ability > Fog canyons > Queens gardens > Upgrade your dream nail asap.

Lmao, my route is so screwed up. I went crossroad>greenpath (got dash)>fog canyon(literally walked through it and the only thing I saw was I couldn't get to the map guy and thefound the bank woman>fungal waste (spent ages before realising you could ATTACK DOWN on mushrooms to jump over) (I didn't know there was directional attacking besides left and right)>city of tears>royalwaterways>ancientbasin>deepnest ( I missed one of the three magic people )>kingdoms edge>deepnest(got magic person)>realised I missed a bit in city of tears. WHICH WAS ACTUALLY THE NAILMASTER.

I was so upset that I'd gone through a ton of late game areas with the the first nail. I was so confused as to why the enemies were taking 15 - 20 hits. It was dire.

You need improved dash (upgrade) for your moth cloak to get map at fog canyon which makes it following to 'the abyss lcoation' at least. i think fungal wastes should follow the greenpath..
