what does it do?

damage aura and trail. Helps a ton against enemies and bosses. It's especially good on Mantis Lords since with all the dodging you're doing they will pass through your afterimage and take free damage without you needing to hit them.

I actually didn't get the Mantis Lord achievement even though I killed them. The reason is because my Defender's Crest murdered them after I had died.

NPCs also comment on your stench. At least, some do.

Leg Eater (the fragile charm guy) says he'll offer a discount but idk how significant it is because I already had all his stuff by the time I got the defender crest.

I haven't tried using the defender crest on some of the other NPCs around: unsure if e.g. the deepnest NPCs have dialogue for it.

I also hear it can change the effect of some other charms. I know it changed at least one of mine.

Specifically the "Glowing Womb" charm that summons mini knights. Though the place that suggested this to me (somewhere in another discussion) suggested it affected others as well, though I can't for sure remember which. I would suggest experimentation.

Yeah the ElderBug makes comments and most every NPC makes a comment. The NPC who buys your relics will actually refuse to buy anything because of your smell

Shroom charm + Defender's Crest. You'll not explode in Spores, but you'll farts a giant fog that'll damage minions (maybe more than just with the Shroom charm)
