Lost and Frustrated
I'm seeing posts about people being 'lost' and 'frustrated' as a common theme. It's holding me off from making a purchase. Is the developer planning on making it easier to acquire maps? Or is someone going to make a mod that provides easier access to maps?

Thanks!

maps are easy as hell to get, just get all the mapping tools at the start of the game and find the map vendor

It's hard to get lost once you buy a charm that indicate player's location, and that charm is your first charm available that moment so no problem.

Then 'frustrated', which I don't understand. Isn't every souls game has no map? In HK you just keep exploring area until you find the map maker then you got one, way kinder than souls games.

i had nooo f**king clue where i was supposed to go at any time in the game. i ended up running all over repeatedly, collecting later game upgrades way before early game upgrades and stuff.

overall the game, i hate to say it, is very poorly made in that regard. the htiboxes are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ too at times, and there is HUGE HUGE HUGE frame skippnig that totally destroys you during boss fights and you die with no chance.

on top of that the stupid a$$ map doesnt even update as you adventure. you have to go through a cave and then run back to a save point and ONLY THEN does your map update. it doesnt ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ update as youre running through but only after youve already finished your business there.

like holy ♥♥♥♥ its stupid.

The map system is intentionally hard. Maps are only given to you by an NPC, usually found 3/4 into the map you've already explored, so... yeah it's their way of forcing you to back track.

The main turn off is the lack of town warps. If you could warp back to the main hub at least it would be bearable.

I could just about handle the very megre save point system, and the stupid transit system which has about 4 points when you've reached at least ten very distanced corners of the map world. But the dead walking time you spend is pretty silly, and it's hurting the game for me, which otherwise is pretty great.

I actually like the way the maps are handled.
I think everything was really well thought out. Its not for everyone but i enjoy it.

I really like the game and they really nailed what they were going for. That said, I really wish I had any idea of where I should go or where upgrades were. Maybe I just like getting stuff done over backtracking and exploration.

Its a great game, but people that are used to being hand held will always unload their salt on the steam forums whenever a game tries something a bit different for the sake of flavor

What percentage of time is spent playing vs. looking for a map? That's my main concern.

I had trouble earlier on and got seriously lost and became aimless. But, I began to look at my map as I visited each location and took mental note of which areas I was actually able to access and which areas I couldn't access or were very very difficult. Overtime I began to unlock more and more upgrades and memorized places I would have access to after getting a type of power or another. This game is surprisingly long but in a good way.

Well, one of the major cornerstones of this game is exploration. To unlock a map for the new area (though you need another buyable upgrade to see where you are on the map via an icon) So naturally as you explore you should come across the guy that is drawing the map to sell to you. You can find him in each major area. If you somehow miss him (i'm not sure waht determines this factor) his map appears in his shop as being purchaseable. Maybe it becomes available if you enter the specific zone he is in, then leave it?

If you don't find a map but otherwise reached the main goal of an area, you can buy the map in town. No need to blindly search for it.

Is not really that hard to find the map, and exploration is very important for this game, you walk , find a dead end because you dont have x ability, then go another way. It will become easier once someone starts a wiki and guides start to appear.

There is not a lot of time spent looking for a map, and exploring while you don't have a map is still a good time. To me the save spots and fast travel are a bit spread out, so my issue is much more the "I don't know where to go, guess I'll spend 3 minutes getting to this place, oops I can't go there yet, I'll spend another 3 minutes getting to this other place". I assume there is a double-jump and double-dash soon that'll make that a lot faster. It feels like lots of wasted time because I have no direction on where to go. But to an extent that is how these games are.

I'd thoroughly recommend you buy this game but I think it's worth bearing in mind that it's very much like a Dark Souls/Boodborne/Demon Souls game rather than a traditional metroidvania. That means very little in the way of guidance a lot of the time, which looks like it's caused some frustration with people in this forum who were maybe expecting a bit more direction. You have to explore by yourself, often without a map for the area you're in (until you find one) and there are times when you'll lose the last 10 or 15 minutes' progress and not have a clear path to get back to where you were on your second attempt.

It never feels unfair, though - it's really clear to me that every death I've died has been my fault, the game is giving me all the tools and information I need to win, I just need to search for it and analyse what I'm seeing.

If you don't like the sound of that, I think you'd probably find the game frustrating. But it's very, VERY good!
