BUG: the conspirators

When you return with the letter and ignore the guard after the first cutscene there is another where he comes to you at the castle door - and that's it. You are stuck in the cutscene, you can see people walk around but control isn't returned to you. You can't even exit with ESC. Had to hit ALT-F4 to kill the game processt.

I've had this happen, for me if you wait long enough it usually fixes itself, and by long enough I mean usually anywhere from 5-15 min. Go to the bathroom, grab a snack, make some coffee, but at least you won't lose your progress.

This worked for me in similar situations, I opened the menu once and it just froze, but I let it sit and eventually it went.

Then again my game seems to be particularly buggy, not sure why...

What I did was relaunch the game which put me back at the entrance, and then I talked to the guard right after his cutscene.

For sure as long as you have a fairly recent save that is of course a completely viable option. I do believe it auto saves at that point. But that was just in case it's been awhile and you didn't realize it, worth a shot imo.
