You can of course play in offline mode, but you will miss certain aspects of the online Pawn exchange functionality and the online Ur-Dragon battle. That said, you can temporarily connect online to download pawns from the Rift and then take it offline completely.
A big part of DD's attraction, aside from the awesome combat mechanics, is in exchanging cool-looking pawns with friends and other DD community members. There's nothing more satisfying than being able to share your adventures (and screenshots!) with the online community, and being able to tell the story through your avatar and friend pawns is essential to that experience :)
EDIT: just adding a bit more context on what it means to go offline in DDDA.
Damnit capcom, you dun good. You dun good ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. You are now higher on my list than square.
Thank you for the reply. It cleared all my worries :) God bless ya
Thanks for the reply, but the "broadband internet conection" featuring on MINIMUM requirements is very misleading, then.
