So, Cassardis and Inbreeding...?
Most, if not all of the NPCs, address you as "cos," or "cousin" at the end of their sentences. It seems like the entire town has experienced some inbreeding... I mean, I wouldn't have cared if one, two, three, four, five, six, etc. NPCs called you that, but when ALMOST the entire town calls you that, the family looks pretty huge.... inbreedingly huge.

I wouldn't blame them; Cassardis is a pretty isolated fishing village with access to all the food they can get from the ocean, and the only way out of the village is surrounded by monsters.... They have no choice but to dabble with each other, lol.

The word "cousin" had a much broader meaing in Elizabethan times - it could be used to signifiy any close relationship outside the nuclear family.
Good to know. As for Adaro, I believe the lore is that your parents died when you were young and he took responsibility for caring for you. The same thing happened with Quina. So you're not related by blood, you were both adopted by the village chief.

Before anyone asks... Yes, that means she can be a waifu.

One of the NPCs mentions that the village chief "whelped" the Arisen, as in, he's your father.

And we know Quina is the chief's daughter.

Soooooo....

As I said, you're both adopted from separate families after your parents died. So, again, you're not genetically related.

not to mention that aside from pawns there's only like 28 people in the world...

Hah, well more than that. The number that you can profitably interact with is pretty low though.

I'm sure it's already been mentioned already, but judging by the variety of accents, the nearby outpost, the (ostensible) existence of nearby villages, and the fact Cassardis isn't any more isolated than wooden gate, there probably really isn't much trouble when it comes to injecting new blood into the gene pool. Literally nothing is stopping anyone from leaving and coming back, or from outsiders settling there.

As for "cos/cousin," I don't see how it's any different from people calling each other "fam," "bruv/bro," "sis," or "cuz" in real life. It's just a familial term that conveys friendship and community. I mean, I'm Igbo, and generally speaking it's common for all Africans (and really everyone but maybe North Americans/Australians/Western Europeans) to refer to men and women who are older than they are as "uncle" or "auntie," regardless of whether they're related or not. Hell, even the ones who ARE related but aren't in that manner, eg, I have an older relative that I know as "Auntie Obianuju" despite the fact that she's actually my grand cousin. It's just a form of respectful address.

The Arisen is an orphan whose parents died at some undetermined time in their childhood. Quina is also an orphan and was probably a little bit older when she lost her mother. None of the three are actually related.

Cousin can also mean a person of similar culture, race, or nation. It isn't limited to just family, although that is the common usage of the word.

It can also just be a term of endearment, which is decently common usage, however I don't know if it is "proper" usage.

First, you need to remember that the Dragon just attacked the village and killed an unknown amount of people. Second in the opening cutscene you see a knight recruitung people for the army, so no doubt after the dragon attack a bunch of able bodied men joined. And lastly the recent brine infestation in a fising village probably caused a mass exodus of people.

The name "cos" (some say cousin) is more than likely just a term of endearment or informality. The Arisen's an orphan with no immediate familial ties in the village, but the place is so small that everyone's like family anyway.

Think of it as an Olde Englishe "bro".

Problem with this is that every building in Cassardis is occupied. Even one of the damaged buildings with walls caved in still has people trying to live in it. If there had been an exodus, there'd be empty houses everywhere.

Hey Arisen! It's your cousin Roman, let's go bowling!
Some small cities around where I live, people do call each other as "primos" or "irmão" (cousins in portuguese). It's not very common though (the "primo" one at least). I guess it's just their way to speak to each other.
