(and what the above poster said.)
I read there was a fast travel system, is that in Gran Soren ? or do I need to advance the storey a bit more first before that feature appears ?
In your sotrage their should be an eternal ferrystone. The eternal ferrystone lets you teleport to areas where you have placed portcrystals, you have 3 portcrystals placed by default (Gran Soren, Cassardis and BBI) which can;t be changed, but you can set up to 8-9 extra portcrystal locations - so you basically "set up your fast travel locations".
You don't have to go too far, there are some quests inside the city that are simple enough to do and there are 9 (3 of which are in BBI) notice boards in the game. 1 in Cassardis, 1 in the encampment, 4 in Gran Soren (2 in thepawn guild, 1 in the Arnsmiths Pub and 1 in the Inn).
As for vocations choose which ones you like and feel free to switch. The game isn't that grindy - unless you choose to make it so. 3-4 levels, a few skills and some better gear goes a long way.
Yeah, for future reference you can min-max in this game which can be fine. But I'd recommend you make an extra save file - look up how to do it - after you've had enough of your first account.
If you miss anything don't fret and start over again, you have multiple options, such as restarting on hard, or beating the game. NG+ carries a lot of thing over. Your items, explored areas, acheivement status, portcrystal settings so you can breeze multiple playthroughs very quickly.
Go to the Inn in Gran Soren. In the stash there should be an eternal ferrystone, take it in your Inventory and use it. Then you should be able to fast travel.
I had a look through my inventory but cannot see a eternal ferrystone....I assumed I picked one up near the everfalls entrance...
