Also, maybe throwblasts could knock him down, in pinch. It only needs to be a relatively small amount of damage to his head or headchest area, to knock him out of it.
MK? Unsure here. The answer to everything is to always drop two appropriate-element Great Cannons though. Focused bolt can stagger him for certain, so enough shots(preferably Holy I'd wager) from that should do the trick quite handily.
Not a fan of climbing with heavy melee classes, but it's an option.
